Parent Tips
This is your go-to guide for everything you and your camper need to know to be prepared and have an awesome camp experience! Read the Parent Handbook >>

Drop-Off and Pick-Up
Parents are required to sign their child in and out of camp (children are not allowed to walk home at the end of the camp day). Campers must be signed out by a parent or guardian at the end of camp each day. The adult checking the child in must be 18 years old or older, have valid I.D and be listed on the child's application. For the safety of your child, we will not waiver on these requirements!

Drop-Off
For all camps, drop-off is 7:00-9:00 AM. Curbside services will be offered to our families. We ask that parents come in through the main parking lot. A counselor will record your time, and your child will be walked to their respective group. Come into the parking lot, drive all the way to the right. That will pull you beside our youth program building.

Early Drop-Off
Camp begins with supervision of programs at 7:00 AM. Campers MAY NOT be dropped off at camp prior to 7:00 AM. This allows the camp staff to properly prepare for the day without interruption. Camp Staff will be ready to greet your campers promptly at 7:00 AM.

Pick-Up
Pick-up is between 4:00-6:00 PM. Curbside services will also be offered at the end of the day. Children will only be released to legal guardian or responsible adult listed on the registration form. Every authorized individual must present a photo ID at rides out. In the event that a child will be picked up by an adult not listed on the registration form, a parent note (including the person's name as it appears on their photo ID) is required and a photo ID must be shown during rides out.

Early Pick-Up
We encourage you to leave your child at camp until the day ends so they will not miss out on activities and recognition of awards earned that day. We understand that there will be exceptions and when these occur, please notify the Camp Director in writing or as early as possible.

Late Fee
In fairness to our staff and because of subsequent program demands, it is very important that your child is picked up each camp day on time. Pick up after the designated pick up time of 6:00 PM will result in a late fee charge to be paid the following day. This fee is $1 per minute after 6:05 PM. This secures accountability in the care of the children. Failure to pay the late fee will result in a cessation of services until the fee is paid. Payment may not be left with the counselor and/or leadership staff. All payments must be made at the sales and service desk.

Check the weather daily and dress your camper accordingly — the camp day will continue rain or shine! Be sure to label EVERYTHING you send to camp with your camper and check the camp’s lost and found at the end of the week before items are donated.
  • Children should dress comfortably in clothes that can get dirty
  • Pack a healthy lunch, water bottle and 2 snacks for morning and afternoon
  • Swimsuit and towel with sandals to walk to the pool and back from the changing area
  • Plastic bag for the wet swimsuit and towel
  • Spray sunscreen and bug spray
  • Extra change of clothes
  • Day pack or small book bag to hold all belongings that your child can comfortably carry
  • Campers will be outdoors 90% of the day so be prepared for hot weather days
  • Please dress your kids in cool clothing for hot weather days (light colors, light fabric, hat and visor)
  • We strongly recommend kids wear tennis shoes to protect their feet during camp activities
  • A light jacket, if needed

  • Good attitudes!

The Johnston Y will provide breakfast, lunch and snack for campers beginning June 12-August 25. Campers also have the option of bringing their own breakfast, lunch and snack. Please be mindful to provide healthy, balanced meals that are not heavily sugared or high in caffeine. A complete meal should include a meat or meat alternate, fruit or vegetable, and bread. Sodas and fast food will not be permitted in the program. There may be occasional sweets served at special events, but servings will be limited. View our lunch menu >>

Medical Authorization Form
Does your child need to take medicine during the day? If so, use our form to give us your permission and the specific details about your child’s medication. Print and complete form >>

Swim Assessment
Before swimming at camp, all campers are swim tested in the pool under the direct supervision of certified lifeguards and camp staff. Parents can help speed up our swim testing by having your child swim tested before camp begins. Swim tests can be given at any YMCA of Greater Charlotte branch. If you are planning to have your camper take the swim test prior to his or her session, it must be completed by close of business the Wednesday before the session begins. Certified Life Vests are available for any child not able to successfully pass our swim test. Learn more >>

The safety and comfort of our campers is always our top priority and we want you to be aware of the changes we will make to our camp schedule with the heat is on. Read our policy >>

Sunscreen Application
Protecting skin from the sun’s damaging rays is important. If you have specific questions about sunscreen application or if you have a child with a sunscreen allergy, please contact your branch camp director.
  • Apply sunscreen to your child before arriving at camp — we can assist in reapplying as needed
  • Send your preferred sunscreen labeled with your child’s name on it
