YMCA of Greater Charlotte

Harris YMCA

Room in the Inn

In partnership with Urban Ministries, the Harris YMCA provides shelter, food and activities for our homeless neighbors. The Harris YMCA began this partnership in December 2010 and has housed over 150 homeless men and women in the Charlotte area through March 2012. Activities range from simple conversation, fellowship and a chapel service to using the fitness equipment, playing a game of basketball and showering. Harris YMCA volunteers and staff provide dinner, breakfast, socks, an evening of fellowship, ministry and a to go sack lunch for the following day.

Room in the Inn provides Charlotte's homeless population with food and shelter during the four coldest months of the year. We hosted a total of 87 men during seven weekends this past winter. The program was supported by over 100 staff and member volunteers who were willing to prepare and serve meals, entertain our neighbors, lead chapel services, make beds, and contribute socks and toiletries. Room in the Inn is also supported by dollars raised through our Community Support Campaign. Money raised was used to purchase air mattresses, linens and food items. The program was a huge success based on comments from all participants – volunteers and neighbors.

***We are currently looking for one or two people to serve on the Christian Emphasis Committee and take on a major leadership role in the planning and execution of Room In the Inn for next winter.
