THEIR POTENTIAL
Y Readers Literacy Programs: Improving Literacy
The purpose of Y Readers, in partnership with CMS, is to engage children, currently performing below grade level, in active learning and enrichment that improves literacy skills and self-confidence in the classroom. In Summer 2011, all 32 participants at the Harris & Harris Express YMCAs Y Readers site (Billingsville Elementary) raised or maintained their reading level with an average increase in reading proficiency of five months.
$1,300 covers the cost for one child to attend the Y Readers literacy program.
Community Swim Academy: Saving Lives
Partnering with Sterling Elementary, the Harris YMCA Community Swim Academy provided life-saving free swim lessons for the entire second grade during the 2011-2012 school year.
$50 allows one child to receive six weeks of swim lessons in the Community Swim Academy.
THEIR HEALTH
Helping Overweight People Embrace (H.O.P.E.)
The Harris YMCA H.O.P.E. Program provides emotional support for participants as they discover and implement strategies that can break unhealthy overeating behaviors. The goal is to develop these strategies into habits in order to maintain a lasting lifestyle change.
$180 enables one YMCA member to participate in the H.O.P.E. program for one year.
Beyond Limits: Regaining Life
A unique collaboration with Carolinas HealthCare System and the Harris YMCA allowed us to launch our newest outreach program - Beyond Limits. This program provides transitional patients from CHS to specialized post-rehabilitative training at the Harris YMCA to help participants regain physical abilities they have lost due to unforeseen incidents. This twelve week program includes individual assessments and goals set by a personal trainer located in the Harris YMCA.
THEIR FUTURE
Support to the McCrorey YMCA: Building Community
The Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve. Together we can build stronger, more inclusive communities, provide support for families and promote positive change. With your donations, the Harris YMCA helps our sister branch, the McCrorey Family YMCA, provide funding for senior programs, youth sports, Afterschool, teen programs, day camp, an afterschool autism program and swim lessons.
Room in the Inn - Urban Ministries Partnership
In partnership with Urban Ministries, the Harris YMCA, in collaboration with Hoskin Ministries, provides shelter, food and activities ranging from conversation, fellowship and spiritual support, where Y volunteers and staff are able to care for and support our homeless neighbors. We host this program seven times serving 84 neighbors from December through March.
Charitable gifts made to the YMCA of Greater Charlotte represent a gift to the entire YMCA mission. To help the most number of people in need, the YMCA uses donations where they can do the most good by pooling them together to strengthen the entire community. Because your gift is helping the YMCA provide life-transforming programs to adults and children, your gift is tax deductible.
YMCA Mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
