THEIR POTENTIAL
Afterschool and Summer Camp
The Lake Norman YMCA provides scholarships to offer a fun, safe environment for more than 1000 kids and teens throughout the year where they engage in enriching, healthy activities with positive role models.
$280 provides a child with one month of afterschool care.
YMCA Y Readers
Y Readers identifies pre-k through 2nd grade children currently performing below grade level. It engages students in active learning and enrichment that improves literacy skills and self-confidence in the classroom. By combining an innovative curriculum with enthusiastic teachers and volunteers, the Y has inspired thousands of children and is critical to the community's collective effort to improve the graduation rate and success of children. During the summer of 2011, 88% of students who participated in Y Readers raised or maintained their reading levels. In 2012, the Lake Norman YMCA will provide 48 children at Bailey Middle School with the Y Readers program.
$1,200 covers the cost for one child to attend the YMCA Y Readers literacy program.
Sports and Swimming
Each year the Lake Norman YMCA provides sports leagues, gymnastics and swim lessons for more than 2,000 children. Their experience builds social, athletic and leadership skills as well as promoting healthy physical activity. One and ten of those children receive financial assistance that enables them to participate.
$660 provides a child with one year of gymnastics.
Adaptive Water Ski
Each summer, children and adults learn to overcome physical disabilities by learning to water ski at the Lake Norman YMCA. The YMCA provides access to the waterfront, equipment and staffing for the Adaptive Sports Program each week throughout the summer.
THEIR HEALTH
Active Adults
The Lake Norman YMCA's OWLS (Older Wiser Living Strong) program helps the senior members of our community avoid isolation by bringing them together to share in common interests through chair exercise, wellness programs and Christian fellowship. More than 120 seniors participate in this off-side program which brings the activities directly to participants.
$125 provides a senior with one month of activities.
THEIR FUTURE
English as a Second Language
Since 2001, more than 2,700 adults and children have learned English at the YMCA and now have a better opportunity to sustain employment and contribute to the community. Additionally, the Lake Norman YMCA provides resources and referral support for many newcomers, including Spanish translation, at the YMCA and at local service providers as needed. The Lake Norman YMCA served 200 people with ESL classes in 2010.
$80 provides a participant with one ESL class.
Charitable gifts made to the YMCA of Greater Charlotte represent a gift to the entire YMCA mission. To help the most number of people in need, the YMCA uses donations where they can do the most good by pooling them together to strengthen the entire community. Because your gift is helping the YMCA provide life-transforming programs to adults and children, your gift is tax deductible.
YMCA Mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
