Parent Tips
We are committed to giving you all the information you need to be prepared and have an awesome camp experience! You’ll receive a “Welcome to Camp” email with detailed camp information the Friday before your child’s camp begins. Please read through it thoroughly. If you do not receive an email the Friday prior to camp starting, please email us
Drop-Off and Pick-Up
Please help us keep camp on schedule by dropping off and picking up your child on time. Enter the Lake Norman YMCA at Davidson Street entrance. Make first left and pull to the left side of the campus.  All traffic stays left into the parking lot behind the building, circles around and pulls up driver side to the sidewalk.

Parents should remain in vehicle and staff will help children exit vehicles.  All participants should exit vehicles curbside only.  Parents should tell Camp staff of any preschoolers being dropped off. Participants must be dropped of by 9:00am.

•    School-aged campers: Drop off is between 7am-9am
•    Preschool campers drop off is at 8:15-9:00am

Pick-up begins 30 minutes prior to campers’ scheduled pick up time that parents registered for. Parents should remain in vehicle and staff will help campers enter vehicle on curbside. Parents may exit vehicle only to assist with buckling of car seats. Staff are not permitted to buckle car seats.

Pick-up times: 12:30pm, 3:00pm, 4:30pm and 6:00pm

Check the weather daily and dress your camper accordingly — the camp day will continue rain or shine! Be sure to label EVERYTHING you send to camp with your camper and check the camp’s lost and found at the end of the week before items are donated. Please see the “Welcome to Camp email” the Friday before your child’s week of camp for any details specific to each individual camp.
Send with your camper:
  • Comfortable clothes and close-toed shoes that can get messy
  • Sturdy, refillable water bottle (athletic type, NOT disposable)
  • Lunch and 2 snacks
  • Spray Sunscreen
  • For Preschoolers – an extra full set of clothes
Leave at home:
  • Electronics
  • Toys
  • Anything expensive or that you would be sad to lose
Campers are very active and will get hungry! Pack a healthy, satisfying lunch every day. We aren’t able to refrigerate lunches, so please pack them in a small cooler/lunch box with ice packs or frozen water bottles. We are a peanut allergy friendly facility so please do not send peanut products to camp. Kona Ice is included in all registrations and served Fridays between 10am and 12:30pm. Label everything!
  • Half-day camps: 1 snack and 1 refillable water bottle
  • For full-day camps: 2 snacks, 1 lunch and 1 refillable water bottle
If you prefer, camp lunches may be purchased through Mama’s Pizza Express at https://lakenorman.hotlunch.com.

Swim Assessment
Before swimming at camp, all campers are swim tested in the pool under the direct supervision of certified lifeguards and camp staff. Parents can help speed up our swim testing by having your child swim tested before camp begins. Swim tests can be given at any YMCA of Greater Charlotte branch. If you are planning to have your camper take the swim test prior to his or her session, it must be completed by close of business the Wednesday before the session begins. Certified Life Vests are available for any child not able to successfully pass our swim test. Learn more >>
The safety and comfort of our campers is always our top priority and we want you to be aware of the changes we will make to our camp schedule with the heat is on. Read our policy >>
Sunscreen Application
Protecting skin from the sun’s damaging rays is important. If you have specific questions about sunscreen application or if you have a child with a sunscreen allergy, please contact your branch camp director.
  • Apply sunscreen to your child before arriving at camp — we can assist in reapplying as needed
  • Send your preferred sunscreen labeled with your child’s name on it

Parent FAQs
Here are some answers to our most frequently asked questions about day camp at the Lake Norman Y.
  • Who is caring for my camper while he/she is at camp?
    • Well-trained and energetic staff! Out counselors, camp staff and lifeguards are required to complete 30 hours of pre-camp training including CPR, First Aid, AED and Child Abuse Prevention. We conduct background checks and drug screenings on all camp staff and employees. Our counselors also learn child development best practices as well as techniques to encourage all campers to be inclusive and celebrate our differences.
  • Does the Y provide lunch?
    • Yes, visit https://lakenorman.hotlunch.com to purchase camp lunches. Kona Ice is included in all registrations and served Fridays between 10am and 12:30pm.
  • Do we swim during the camp day?
    • Yes, school-aged campers in traditional Day Camp spend 2 hours at the lake per day. All other school-aged camp spend 30 minutes in the pool per day. Preschool campers spend 30 minutes at the pool each day.
  • Do we need to update any pick up information or other personal information at the front desk?
    • Yes, please make sure all pick up’s and personal information is accurate before your child begins a camp week. We want to ensure the safety of all children in our programs and doing it through our Personify system, in the branch or online, is your safest option. One off, or last minute, changes should be communicated to the Camp Office at LakeNormanYouth@ymcacharlotte.org or 704-716-4418.
