When you give to the Lowe’s YMCA, you make our community better through life-changing programs and services focused on:

Y Readers
Y ReadersY Readers is the YMCA of Greater Charlotte’s nationally-recognized literacy program designed for rising first through third grade students who are reading below grade level. The program, offered to families at no cost, utilizes certified teachers to provide the additional support students need to be proficient in reading by the end of third grade. Y Readers serves over more than 800 students annually, across three school districts, through a six-week summer camp and an afterschool program. With the generous support of our donors, the Lowe’s YMCA was able to fund 64 Y Readers students last summer at Park View Elementary. Participants also receive free swim lessons and water safety instruction at the Y.

“Eduardo was having trouble adjusting to life in a new country and a new school. His teacher suggested Y Readers, and Eduardo jumped right in. He was excited to spell out sight words and talk about the books he was reading. Throughout the program, his teachers could see that he was progressing in his reading and comprehension skills, and his confidence was rising each day. Y Readers helped Eduardo reach his goals of becoming a better reader, but most importantly, built his confidence as a scholar.” – Y Readers Teacher

A donation of $1,450 offers a child struggling to read the opportunity to improve his literacy skills and build confidence in the classroom through Y Readers.

Summer Camp, Afterschool & Preschool
Each week during the summer, more than 120 kids attend camp at the Lowe’s YMCA where they can be themselves, cultivate friendships and learn from positive role models. Another 160 engage in afterschool and preschool during the school year. One in four receives financial assistance.

A donation of $200 sends a child to one week of summer day camp filled with enriching, healthy activities and positive role models.

A donation of $750 provides one semester of afterschool care, homework help and physical fitness for a child in need of a safe place to go after the bell rings.

Safety Around Water
Safety Around WaterSafety Around Water is the Y’s on-site water safety program that engages low-income youth living in local apartment communities where pools are often without lifeguards. The 8-session course, taught by certified YMCA swim instructors and lifeguards, teaches children basic water safety and swimming skills that reduce their risk of drowning and give them confidence in and around water.

“Because of a near drowning experience when she was younger, my daughter used to be really afraid of the water. The Y’s Safety Around Water Program has changed that. She’s not afraid anymore and loves running and jumping into the pool. Learning to face her fears has also really helped her in other aspects of her life. I’m so grateful that the Y brought this program outside of its four walls and into our community.” – Vanessa, Parent

A donation of $70 gives a child at risk of drowning the chance to learn the life-saving skill of swimming through water safety instruction at her apartment community pool.

Livestrong Cancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on those affected. The YMCA and LIVESTRONG have joined together to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a research-based physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors reclaim their total health. Throughout this 12-week program, participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is helping people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body. The Lowe’s YMCA engages 40 cancer patients and survivors in the program each year.

“Last summer after being diagnosed with breast and uterine cancer and undergoing several surgeries and radiation treatments, my doctors suggested I join the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program. They were right! Participating in the program helped me regain strength as well as my positive outlook on life. The compassion and knowledge of the Lowe’s YMCA staff, along with the support of fellow participants, helped me improve my quality of life – physically, mentally and spiritually. I am very thankful for the program and the remarkable role it has played in my healing process. I would recommend it to anyone currently battling or recovering from cancer.” – Tanya Marsh

A donation of $500 gives a cancer survivor 12 weeks of individualized programming to help regain strength, stamina and quality of life.

Financial Assistance
Our Y is committed to serving those in greatest need. Through the generosity of our donors, we’re able to provide financial assistance for membership access and program participation, making life-changing Y programs and services available to those who need us most in the Mooresville community.

“Growing up, I spent a lot of time alone. I never had a babysitter or attended camp. All I really had was my older brother, and together, we had some of the best times of our childhood. Now that I’m a camp counselor at the Y, I have the opportunity to switch roles and be a big brother for our campers. I get to help kids make lifelong memories and be someone they can turn to for support and belonging, like my older brother did for me.” – Camp Counselor
