COMMUNITY SWIM ACADEMY: SAVING LIVES Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children under twelve, primarily within minority and low-income communities.* To reverse this trend, the Simmons YMCA and Albermarle Road Elementary School have partnered to provide children with a life-saving opportunity. Through free swim lessons, this year more than 75 children in grades 1-5 will learn basic water safety and swimming skills at our Y. *According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
ACTIVE ADULTS 55+: IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE FOR OLDER ADULTS For more than 770 older adults, the Simmons YMCA is a daily destination for fellowship, fitness and lifelong learning- and a cup of coffee and conversation in our lobby. We make a positive difference in the lives of our senior members through weekly health assessments, exercise classes, study groups, field trips and "lunch and learn" seminars.
YOUTH SPORTS AND FITNESS: OVERCOMING CHILDHOOD OBESITY Today, one in every five children is overweight*. The Simmons YMCA is the starting point for many youth to become physically active and develop healthy habits that they can carry with them throughout their lives. This year, more than 4,300 children of all ages and abilities will participate in dance, tae kwon do, team sports, or home school physical education, and discover the values of fairness, cooperation and hard work. *According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
