When you give to the Harris & Harris Express YMCAs, you make our community better through life-changing programs and services focused on:

Y Readers
Y ReadersY Readers is the YMCA of Greater Charlotte’s nationally-recognized literacy program designed for rising first through third grade students who are reading below grade level. The program, offered to families at no cost, utilizes certified teachers to provide intensive literacy support through a six-week summer camp. The Harris & Harris Express YMCAs fund 64 students at Huntingtowne Farms Elementary.
“At the end of last school year, my daughter Ja’Niyah was reading below grade level. And what she could read, she didn’t comprehend. I was worried about her academic future so I enrolled her in Y Readers summer camp. The six-week program and its supportive teachers have done wonders for Ja’Niyah. After completing Y Readers, she progressed two reading levels and was reading on grade level at the beginning of this school year. It’s awesome to see such positive changes in Ja’Niyah. She has developed a love for reading and school.”
– Marie Washington
A donation of $1,450 offers a child struggling to read the opportunity to improve their literacy skills and build confidence in the classroom.

Teen Leadership Development
Through the Harris YMCA Youth & Government and Leader’s Club programs, 80 teens each year get the chance to learn the value of civic service and enhance their public speaking and relationship-building skills.
A donation of $300 helps a teen build a strong foundation for the future with one year of leadership development programming.

Safety Around Water
The Y’s Safety Around Water program engages low-income and minority families living in apartment communities where pools are most often without lifeguards. The 8-session course, taught by certified YMCA instructors, teaches children skills that reduce their risk of drowning and give them confidence in and around water. The Harris & Harris Express YMCAs aims to serve 105 children across three apartment communities this summer.
A donation of $75 gives a child at risk of drowning the chance to learn the life-saving skill of swimming.

H.O.P.E. (Helping Overweight People Embrace)
The Harris YMCA H.O.P.E. program provides therapeutic support to 20 participants each year as they gain insight into emotional overeating and learn to implement lasting lifestyle changes.
A donation of $475 provides support and resources for an individual hoping to change unhealthy eating behaviors.

Beyond Limits
Beyond LimitsThrough a unique collaboration with Carolinas HealthCare System, the Russ Guerin Beyond Limits program provides specialized post-rehabilitative training to help 50 traumatic injury patients each year regain physical abilities.
“Fifteen years ago I was shot in the shoulder at point blank range. What began that day was a long journey of pain. Doctors simply said, ‘You just have to learn to live with the pain.’ So when my wife introduced me to the Beyond Limits program at the Harris YMCA, I was hopeful. Within a week, I was signed up and working with Y staff in the pool and weight room. A wonderfully gifted team, they serve and minister to the whole person, not just the physical problem. That’s what makes this program so transformational. For the first time in 15 years I am moving out of survival mode and back into living again.”
– Reid Satterfield, Beyond Limits Participant

A donation of $1,500 provides eight weeks of specialized post-rehabilitation training.

Autism Inclusion Afterschool
In collaboration with Autism Charlotte, the Harris YMCA’s Autism Inclusion Afterschool program provides seven autistic middle schoolers with a caring, structured environment where professionally trained staff tailor curriculum to meet individual needs.
A donation of $150 provides one month of structured afterschool care for a child with autism.
Adaptive Swim Lessons
Adaptive Swim Lessons at the Harris YMCA meet the emotional, cognitive and physical abilities of each individual. Each year, 80 swimmers are connected with highly-trained instructors who provide one-on-one guidance.

Strengthening the South Boulevard Community
Access and BelongingCommitted to serving the growing Hispanic population in our community, the Harris & Harris Express YMCAs work in partnership with neighboring schools, local initiatives and like-minded nonprofits to extend our reach and impact across Charlotte’s fragile South Boulevard corridor. Outreach efforts include:
> English as a Second Language – serve 175 participants annually through a collaboration with Forest Hill Church and Central Piedmont Community College
> Parents as Teachers – provide 15 under-resourced families each year
with access to early learning resources and support
> Community Workshops – host seven sessions each year focused on healthy living, mental health support, and accessing community and school resources
Maria Flores and her four children live in a neighborhood along South Boulevard and have been engaged in community strengthening programming at the Harris YMCA for nearly three years. With the Y’s support, Maria has been able to connect with local resources, learn to navigate the school system and explore new activities for her children. “I’m becoming a better mother because of the Y,” she says. “I’m very grateful for these programs and the people who donate to make this possible for my family,” says Maria. “We’ve grown closer as a family because we’re all a part of the Y.”

Harris YMCA Equity Fund
The Harris YMCA Equity Fund exists because we believe every child deserves the opportunity to reach his or her greatest potential regardless of family income. The fund supports kids and families who need additional resources in order to participate in Harris YMCA youth programming, including summer camp, afterschool, preschool, gymnastics, dance and youth sports. Families are awarded Equity Fund assistance after completing a personal and confidential review of their financial situation, and after My Y Pricing rate adjustments have been applied. The Harris YMCA Equity Fund provides assistance above and beyond the standard rate adjustments.
