Y READERS
Y Readers identifies pre-k through 2nd grade children who are currently performing below grade level. It engages students in active learning and enrichment that improves literacy skills and self-confidence in the classroom. During the summer of 2011, 88% of students who participated in the six-week program raised or maintained their reading levels. The program helps teens set and achieve post-secondary education and future career goals.  The Center City YMCAs support the Y Achievers program at West Mecklenburg High School.

SWIM LESSONS
Each year the Stratford Richardson YMCA provides swim lessons for more than 1,000 kids and teens. YOUTH SPORTS
During the fall of 2011, the Stratford Richardson YMCA provided 4-week flag football and basketball clinics at no cost to 200 kids in the West Corridor thanks to generous donors who fully subsidized the programs.  In 2012, the Y remains committed to providing donor funded sports programming to kids and families who cannot afford it.

THEIR HEALTH

HEALTH, WELL-BEING & FITNESS
Committed to improving the health and well-being of Charlotte's West Corridor, the Stratford Richardson YMCA provides the community with access to the resources and guidance needed to maintain and improve physical activity. At the Y, no child, family or adult is turned away. We recognize that for communities to succeed, everyone must be given the opportunity to be healthy, confident, connected and secure.

THEIR FUTURE

GETTING AHEAD
At the Y, we offer the Aha! Process's "Getting Ahead" program as an educational tool for adults who are motivated to defeat the odds and build a better future for themselves and their families. During the 15 sessions of Getting Ahead, participants are led by a facilitator and work together in 2-hour intervals to examine the impact of poverty on themselves and their communities.  By program graduation, each participant will create a plan around their strengths and set goals to build their own resources to begin a journey of self sufficiency.
$1,400 covers the cost to serve one family in the Getting Ahead program.
