HEALTH & SAFETY

While summer fun is what we do, safety is the highest priority.

We take your child's health and safety very seriously and exceed top industry standards in all areas of our camp operation including facilities, dining, staff and programming. YMCA Camp Harrison is ACA (American Camping Association) accredited. Our 4:1 camper-to-counselor ratio promotes an environment that helps children grow in spirit, mind and body.

Health Center

Campers who are not feeling well have the opportunity to visit the Health Center as needed. Our on-site health center is staffed by two registered nurses, 24 hours a day. Our camp physician is on call throughout the summer and based at the Carolinas HealthCare System hospital in nearby Wilkesboro.

For the safety of all campers, we do not allow medications in the cabins (exceptions: inhalers and epi-pens). We ask that you bring all medications in original bottles/containers (including any-over-the-counter medication or vitamins) to check-in with the Camp Nurse on opening day. A camp nurse dispenses camper medications at each meal. We keep “as needed” in the Health Center and bring to the dining hall at meal times.

Pick up unused medications during check-out. We dispose of all unclaimed medications one week after the camper’s session.

Dining

We prepare appealing and nutritious meals under the careful supervision of a nutritionist. We strive to meet each child’s dietary needs and successfully accommodate most food allergies.

Staff

We hire the most highly qualified, compassionate staff to mentor and lead your children. We screen each applicant with an in-depth interview, multiple reference checks and background checks by state and national authorities. All staff reflect our five key character traits of caring, respect, responsibility, honesty and faith. All staff are certified in CPR, First Aid and AED.

Water & Land Activities

Safety and quality instruction are paramount in all activities. We require campers to wear Coast Guard approved life jackets at all times while participating in lake activities. Campers wear swim bands (denoting their swim ability) throughout their stay at camp.

The majority of our staff are certified lifeguards or hold a YMCA water certification.  We require our instructors to have special certifications for our ropes course, target sports, mountain biking and equestrian program.
