Strengthening Families Program

What is the Strengthening Families
Program?
The YMCA Strengthening Families Program serves families in Charlotte’s most at-risk neighborhoods through advocacy, family support and collaboration.

This program is part of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte’s Community Development arm. YMCA Community Development is committed to building a stronger community through services to families and children who are the most in need, both locally and globally.

Through donations and grants, the YMCA Strengthening Families Program helps the YMCA fulfill its mission to serve all – in this case, families living in crisis.

“The people in the program have been helping me and my family with emotional, social, and also
economic issues. Through the program I’ve been empowered
and I feel stronger.”

“El Programa me ha ayudado a mi y a mi familia con las situaciones emocionales, sociales y económicas. A través del programa he sido fortalecida y me siento fuerte.”
-Josefa Rubio

YMCA social workers and family advocates are based in neigborhood schools and community centers. This accessibility helps them identify and connect with eligible families. YMCA staff complete a comprehensive assessment for each family, and then work side-by-side with them to set goals and devise a plan of action. Some of the YMCA services offered to these participants include:

• Intensive home visiting
• Instruction in Parents as Teachers curriculum
• Support services in English & Spanish
• Referrals to vital community resources
and agencies
• Health screenings & care by a community
nurse
• Food & clothing through YMCA Hearts andHands Center

On average, it is a 3 year journey from
crisis to stability.
