The YMCA of Greater Charlotte builds strong communities by increasing accessibility, inspiring healthy living, and improving literacy. We live out our mission to serve all by providing financial assistance currently needed by 12% of our membership. Our YMCA reaches 279,104 people through membership, program participation, volunteerism, and philanthropy. According to the Quality of Life Study, of the seventeen neighborhoods that the Stratford Richardson YMCA serves, 47% are challenged, 47% are in transition, and about 1% are considered stable.
You can change the outcome. It all starts with you.
The Dowd and Stratford Richardson YMCAs invite you to enhance the quality of life for children, teens, and seniors in the West Corridor of Charlotte. Your gift to the Dowd & Stratford Richardson YCommunity Outreach Campaign provides the support for the following program areas: |

Afterschool programming at the Stratford Richardson YMCA, licensed by the state of North Carolina, provides a safe, enriching and positive environment for children to learn and grow. All children enrolled have an opportunity to receive tutoring in English and math, and participate in Junior Achievement which focuses on money management and budgeting. |
Day Camp provides campers with an opportunity to participate in specialty camps such as soccer and golf. They also participate in daily enrichment activities such as reading, computer lab, arts and crafts, theme-related field trips and swimming. Only 59% of the children in the Stratford Richardson YMCA service area pass their competency exams compared to 79% for the city of Charlotte overall. In the summer of 2009, the Dowd and Stratford Richardson YMCAs served 106 children in day camp and 30 children in Afterschool. These programs provide youth with safe, enriching and positive programming, encouraging children to learn and grow. 86% of Afterschool participants said that being in YMCA activities helped them do what is right even when other kids want to do something else.
