Why Give to the Harris & Harris Express YMCA's?

By donating to the Annual Giving Campaign you help fund the programs below, which includes our sister branch, the McCrorey YMCA located off of Beatties Ford Road.

Of the nine neighborhoods surrounding the Harris & Harris Express YMCA's*:
  • ALL have a low pedestrian friendliness index
  • More than 8,000 of Charlotte's youth live and play

In the neighborhoods surrounding the McCrorey YMCA*:

  • The dropout rate is as high as 14% while city average is 5.1%
  • The juvenile arrest rate is as high as 4.9%, on a city average of 1%

Youth Programs Each year, the McCrorey YMCA teaches over 600 children new skills and teamwork through basketball, flag football and soccer.

$75 sends one child through a season of youth sports at the McCrorey YMCA.

 Afterschool & Day Camp The McCrorey and the Harris YMCAs offer a fun, safe environment in the summer and during the hours after school where children engage in enriching, healthy activities with positive role models. In 2009, the majority of the 55 children who attended the Harris YMCA Community Enrichment Summer Program were subsidized.

$100 sends one child to a week of Harris YMCA Comunity Enrichment Summer Program.

Starfish Academy Literacy Program YMCA Starfish Academy serves rising 1st & 2nd graders who are performing below their recommended grade level. In the summer of 2009, the Harris & Harris Express YMCAs helped 31 children attend our Billingsville Elementary YMCA Starfish Academy site. Of these, 85% raised or maintained their reading levels during their 6-week session.

$200 sends one child to YMCA Starfish Academy for a week.

Teen Programs Teens In Leadership Training (TILT) encourages healthy lifestyles, academic excellence, positive social awareness, career guidance, mentoring and community building. In addition, Teens have a place they can call their own with the recent opeing of the Titus L. Ivory Teen Center inside the McCrorey YMCA.

$60 allows Teens to enjoy the benefits of the TILT program for one year.

H.O.P.E. Program The Helping Overweight People Embrace (H.O.P.E.) program allows adults to come together weekly at the Harris YMCA to find support and examine the connection between emotional health and unhealthy eating behaviors.

$180 enables one YMCA members to participate in the H.O.P.E. program for one year.

Charitable gifts made to the YMCA of Greater Charlotte represent a gift to the entire YMCA mission. To help the most number of people in need, the YMCA uses donations where they can do the most good by pooling them together to strengthen the entire community.
