MANAGING A HEALTH CONDITION

The Y helps you manage a range of health conditions, including cancer wellness, diabetes prevention and management, Parkinson’s Disease and more. Regular exercise and healthy eating habits are essential to the treatment of many chronic diseases. A team of YMCA of Greater Charlotte health professionals will support you in a comprehensive approach to weight management, fitness programming and medical guidance.

The Y and LIVESTRONG® joined together to create LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. The research-based program offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person.

Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. In addition to physical benefits, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA helps people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body. Learn More >>

One in three Americans have high blood pressure. Of the patients who are aware and are being treated for high blood pressure, almost half are not at goal. We can help change that!

The YMCA, in partnership with the American Heart Association, is excited to bring you Check. Change. Control., a self-monitoring program designed to eliminate high blood pressure as a health disparity among Americans. Learn More >>

Parkinson's Program
Renew is a joint initiative by Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS) Neurosciences Institute, Carolinas Rehabilitation, LiveWELL Health Center and the YMCA to promote a community based neuro wellness program for people with Parkinson's disease. The goal is to improve quality of life by promoting a culture of active lifestyle to maintain or increase independence, safety and well-being.

Services are provided by professionals who specialize in the care of individuals with Parkinson's disease, and include the following:

• Comprehensive medical assessment by a physician
• Wellness programs within the YMCA
• Eight week program, with option to renew for an additional eight weeks
• Individual training session, once weekly
• Group Exercise sessions, twice weekly
• Periodic re-assessment by the physician and physical therapist

A physician referral is required to enrolled in the physical therapy portion of the Parkinson Program. After completion of physical therapy, participants transition into the wellness program offered at the Y. Individuals are encouraged to continue to exercise and maintain an active lifestyle following completion of the RENEW Parkinson program.
