Volunteer in April

 Volunteer work and service does not have to take place overseas. Below are a list of volunteer opportunities right here in the Charlotte area. Try volunteering as a family- see what a difference you can make!

Saturday, April 5 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM Carolina Raptor Center Carolina Raptor Center, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to environmental education and the conservation of birds of prey through public education, the rehabilitation of injured and orphaned raptors and research. Each month, HOC volunteers help support the Center's efforts through a variety of activities that include: trail building and maintenance, recycling, planting, mulching and weeding, and much more. Come join us as we help out one of Hands On Charlotte's most unique and valuable community partners!
Sunday, April 13 2:00 - 4:00 pm Special Olympics Bowling If you like to spend time with friendly and fun-loving people, this is a project for you! Volunteers will be assigned as lane monitors for Special Olympics athletes and will make sure the athletes bowl in the correct order while offering them encouragement. This is Special Olympics' most popular sport and over 40 athletes of various skill levels participate each week.
Monday, April 14 or Monday, April 18 6:00 - 7:30 PM Fairmarket Friends Join the residents at Fairmarket Plaza Apartments, a low-income residential senior community, for an evening of fun and games. Volunteers will take part in a wide variety of activities, including bingo games, cookouts, movie night, and much more. Have an exciting evening that will bring joy to a lovely group of seniors.
Thursdays, April 3, 17 or 24 3:00 - 5:00 PM Digital Divide: CharloTEEN The mission of Jacob’s Ladder Job Center, Inc. is to help unemployed and underemployed people find and keep living wage jobs. Join other CharlotTEENS for one afternoon a week and help clients with computer skills! If you know how to search the internet and check email, you will be a big help at Jacob's Ladder! If you would like to help someone get back on his or her feet and become self-sufficient, this is the project for you!
Tuesdays, April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 6:30 - 8:00 PM GED/ABLE This tutoring program for students seeking to get their GED needs volunteer tutors. This group meets at the Dowd YMCA. All students have workbooks provided by CPCC that give good directions for how to work through problems. The reading usually consists of a short story with vocabulary and comprehension questions. If you have graduated from high school, you can help these students. If you're patient, open to meeting new people, and maintain a "teamwork mentality", you'll be great.
Wednesdays, April 2, 16, 30 6:30 - 7:30 PM HomeWork Hounds Volunteers will tutor students that participate with the Arbor Glen Buccaneers football team as players or cheerleaders. Tutoring sessions will take place every other Wednesday evening at the West Blvd. Library.
