Facilities & Equipment

The Johnston YMCA is located in the historic North Davidson (NoDa) district of Charlotte. Originally located on 36th Street, the branch moved to its current home in 1948. The branch was named by David Johnston in memory of his father, Horace Johnston. The facility was built to be the community center for the mill families living in north Charlotte.

Today the Johnston YMCA focuses on promoting healthy spirit, mind and body for all. It has become the model for the community and thrives on diversity and focuses on the mission of the YMCA.

Members have access to more than 50,000 square feet of branch facilities that include:

  • 4,500 square feet of fitness, state of the art cardiovascular equipment including treadmills, elliptical trainers, upright and recumbent bikes, step machines, and free weight equipment including, Nautilus, Cybex, and FitLinxx® (a computer-based, interactive training system)
  • Twin court gymnasium available for open play and league sports
  • Fitness services including orientation, evaluation and personal training
  • 3 group exercise studios for classes such as yoga, Pilates, yogilates, step and totally abs
  • CMC health center with on-site registered nurse
  • Six-lane indoor pool available for lap swim, water fitness, swim team, swim lessons and water yoga
  • Men’s & women’s locker rooms that include full-length lockers
  • Comprehensive family service programs including preschool, afterschool, day camp, teens, adult education, and English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • Innovative arts and humanities programs for people of all ages
  • Free ChildWatch for members
  • Computers with internet access for the community
