Class Descriptions

Parent/Child (English & Spanish)
Level 1 & 2: Shrimp and Kippers
Ages 6 - 12 months

  • Introductory class for parent and child
  • Children must wear rubber pants
  • No diapers
  • Parents must participate with child

Level 3: Inias
Ages 13 - 24 months

  • Child responds to visual and/or verbal clues such as reaching and kicking
  • Children must wear rubber pants
  • No diapers
  • Parent must participate with child

Level 4: Perch
Ages 19 - 36 months

  • Child propels self through water with flotation device allowing another adult to hold him/her in the water
  • Children must wear rubber pants
  • No diapers
  • Parents must participate with child

Level 5: Perch Plus
Ages 2 - 3 years

  • A continuation of basic swimming skills and water safety skills
  • Parents asked to assist the instructor in the water on the first day of class
  • Following classes need one parent to assist, and we will schedule you accordingly
  • Prior participation in Perch class or director's approval required
  • Children must wear rubber pants
  • No diapers
  • Parents must participate with child

Preschool (English)
Level 1: Pike A
Ages 3 - 5 years
30-minute class

  • Little or no water experience necessary
  • Children learn how to swim with a flotation device, blow bubbles with face in the water and lie on their backs with ears in the water     
  • Use a full flotation block

Level 1: Pike B
Ages 3 - 5 years
30-minute class

  • Must swim independently with flotation
  • Children learn to float, glide, flutter kick, jump in and swim horizontally 
  • Class ratio is 5 children to 1 instructor
  • Use a full flotation block

Level 2: Eels
Ages 3 - 5 years
30-minute class

  • Children must be able to swim horizontally with 1/2 flotation block or no flotation for 25 meters
  • Pike skills reviewed
  • Rotary breathing, kicking on back and diving skills taught
  • Class ratio is 5 children to 1 instructor

Level 3: Rays
Ages 4 - 5 years
45-minute class

  • No flotation block necessary
  • Must be able to swim 30 feet horizontally and demonstrate rotary breathing with kickboard
  • Learn bobbing, treading and arm coordination with rotary breathing
  • Class ratio is 6 children to 1 instructor

Youth and Adult (English & Spanish)
Polliwog
Ages 6+
45-minute beginner class

  • Students learn front glide and flutter kick, back glide and flutter kick, paddle stroke and rhythmic breathing

Minnow
Ages 6+
45-minute class

  • Must complete Guppy or be able to swim front crawl, rotary breathing for 25 meters
  • Students learn back crawl, diving and elementary backstroke kick
  • Class ratio is 8 children to 1 instructor

Fish
Ages 6+
45-minute class

  • Must complete Minnow or be able to swim front crawl and back crawl with rotary breathing for 35 meters
  • Students learn breaststroke kick, dolphin kick and elementary backstroke
  • Class ratio is 8 children to 1 instructor

Flying Fish/Shark
Ages 6+
45-minute class

  • Must complete Fish or be able to swim 200 meters front crawl and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke kick and dolphin kick
  • Students learn breaststroke, butterfly, open turns and sidestroke
  • Class ratio is 8 children to 1 instructor

Adults
Ages 12+
45-minute class

  • Open to all beginners
  • This class is especially formed with your individual goals in mind
  • Instruction on strokes is included
