Karen Jones started volunteering at the Johnston YMCA in 1995 as an Afterschool bus monitor and then as a tutor. She now volunteers in many different areas including the Active Older Adults programs, preschool, special events like the Fall Festival, Thanksgiving Dinner, Operation Christmas Child and branch open houses.
 
“I’ve discovered that not only am I giving back to a community and an organization I love but the return for me, a retired school teacher, has been tremendous. When I need cheering up I help with the preschoolers or with the senior’s art day. The facility has a wonderful history and I absolutely love the staff. When 9/11 happened I was honored to be asked to help on a mission trip and every year when I’m asked to help with either the Angel Tree or Operation Christmas Child, I jump at the chance. The opportunities here are endless and I feel that I play a small part of God’s big plan. What an honor.”
