In the neigborhoods surrounding the Lake Norman YMCA*:
- 20% of rising 1st and 2nd graders are not reading at grade level at any given time.
- In the 5-county region, 3/4 of the households with school-age children are households where all parents in the household work. This is an indication of the need for afterschool and summer care.

In 2009, the Lake Norman YMCA sponsored 54 children between two YMCA Starfish Academy sites serving students from six local elementary schools. 74% of the students raised or maintained their reading levels. 98% of parents said that YMCA Starfish Academy taught their child that they can do things they didn't think they could do.
$1,200 provides one child with one summer of YMCA Starfish Academy.

Each summer, children and adults learn to overcome physical disabilities by learning to water ski at the Lake Norman YMCA. The YMCA provides access to the waterfront, equipment and staffing for this organization each week throughout the summer.
$500 provides an afternoon of adaptive water skiing for 15 people with physical disabilities.

The Lake Norman YMCA OWLS (Older Wiser Living Stronger) program provides 115 seniors the opportunity to improve their physical fitness, and emotional and spiritual health through chair exercise, wellness programs and Christian fellowship at four easily accessible off-site locations.
$125 provides one senior with OWLS activities for one month.

Since 2001, more than 2,500 adults and children have learned English at the YMCA and now have a better opportunity to sustain employment and contribute to the community. Additionally, the Lake Norman YMCA provides resources and referral support for many newcomers, including Spanish translation. The Lake Norman YMCA served 235 people with ESL classes in 2009.
$80 provides an individual with one English as a Second Language session.

Each year, the Lake Norman YMCA provides sports leagues, gymnastics and swim lessons for more than 3,000 children. Their experience builds social, athletic and leadership skills as well as promoting healthy physical activity. One in five of these children receive financial assistance.
$300 provides one child with year-round youth sports.
$25 provides one child with one session of swim lessons.
