Program Support

The Lake Norman YMCA provides: The Starfish Academy literacy program, which involves both a six-week summer literacy camp as well as a year-round afterschool and summer program for first and second grade students identified as at-risk for academic failure by their school principle or teacher. Starfish Academy is now a nationally recognized program, having received a 2006 Coming Up Taller Award  presented by the Presidential Committee on the Arts & Humanities. Serving a predominantly low-income population, this program is provided at no cost to the children or their families.

At any given time approximately 20% of our elementary school children are functioning below grade level. Source:  Mooresville Graded Schools

The Lake Norman YMCA provides: Afterschool and Day Camp programs in a safe, nurturing and enjoyable environment with an academic focus. A variety of teen programs as well as monthly Middle School Madness event to provide a safe and supervised location for middle school students.	Participation is club activities during adolescence is linked to higher academic performance and self-esteem.   Source:  Journal of Community Psychology, 31(6)

The Lake Norman YMCA provides: Your donated dollars support English as a Second Language classes for 240 non-English speaking individuals in our community enabling them to communicate effectively in society. Over 90 seniors enjoy exercise, wellness programs and Christian fellowship through our outreach programs in the community.
