In the neighborhoods surrounding the Lowe’s YMCA*:
34% of children attending Mooresville City schools in grades 3 through 8 are identified as economically disadvantaged. Of these children, only 57% are reading at or above grade level.*
27% of Mooresville City high school students are identified as economically disadvantaged. Compared to their classmates, these students are 10% less likely to graduate.* In 2008 & 2009, local newspapers reported 23 closings and 18 layoffs among Iredell County employers, impacting a total of 1,380 employees.† In Iredell County, food stamp need has increased 58% over the past three years.‡

Partnered with Mooresville Graded Schools, the Lowe's YMCA Starfish Academy is a summer literacy camp for rising 1st and 2nd graders who are reading below grade level. During the summer of 2009, the Lowe's YMCA served 24 children at Parkview Elementary. 90% of these children raised or maintained their reading levels.
$1,200 provides one child with one summer of YMCA Starfish Academy.

The Lowe's YMCA Building Teens program gives leadership and guidance to more than 30 Mooresville teens who demonstrate a high potential for success but are challenged by lifestyle, financial difficulty or peer influence. Activities include seminars on self-esteem, responsibility and nutrition as well as career development opportunities.
$350 provides one teen with a school year of Building Teens.

The LIVESTRONG Foundation and the Lowe's YMCA have partnered to develop LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, an eight-week exercise and support program designed for adult cancer survivors who have completed treatment and want to recommit to living life to the fullest. Since 2008, the program has served 40 cancer patients and survivors.
$250 provides one adult with eight weeks of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.

The Lowe's YMCA offers a fun, safe environment for more than 250 children and teens in the summer and another 125 during the hours afterschool where they engage in enriching, healthy activities with positive role models. One in four children receives financial assistance.
$100 provides one child with a week of summer camp.
$300 provides one child with a month of afterschool.

The YMCA preschool curriculum emphasizes socialization, fine and gross motor skills, education and healthy choices in a Christian environment. One in four children receives financial assistance.
$50 provides a preschool registration fee for one child.

Each year the Lowe's YMCA provides sports leagues and swim lessons for more than 2,500 children. Their experience builds social, athletic and leadership skills as well as promoting healthy physical activity. One in 10 children receives financial assistance. $500 provides one child with year-round sports.
$25 provides one child with a session of swim lessons.
