For more than 100 years, the YMCA has been the worldwide leader in coaching people of all ages to feel safe in the water. The YMCA of Greater Charlotte teaches swim lessons to thousands of people each year. All instructors are certified in CPR with AED, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, Bloodborne pathogen and Child Abuse Prevention.

Class Descriptions

Parent & Child (6 months to 2 years)
Children and parents gain comfort in the water and learn water safety skills.
*This class does NOT have a pre-registration and is offered on a first come, first serve basis.  Please sign-in with a lifeguard prior to class.
Perch (2 to 3 years)
Increases comfort with the water. Children learn to put their face in the water, be held by another adult, use a flotation device, and gain independence as they do more swimming on their own.
Preschool Swim Lessons (3 to 5 years)
Pike A Increase comfort in the water with flotation devices.  Face in the water, blow bubbles, paddle stroke skill practice, jumping in from the side of the pool and safety skills.
Pike B Increase comfort in the water with and without flotation devices. Breath control, back float, flutter kick with assistance, paddle stroke for 12 yards and safety skills.
Eel/Ray Swimmers will be placed in Eel or Ray groups based on a skills assessment at the first lesson. Eels learn to submerge, front and back floats, glide from the wall, paddle stroke 12 yards, back kick and finning arms for balance 12 yards, breathing and safety skills. Rays learn longer front and back floats, extended back kick and finning arms for balance 25 yards, breathing to the side 12 yards and treading water. Both groups also learn water safety skills.
Youth Swim Lessons (6 to 12 years)
Polliwog/Guppy

Swimmers will be placed in Polliwog or Guppy groups based on a skills assessment at the first lesson. Polliwogs learn comfort in water, breathing to one side, front and back float, and free style for 12 strokes. Guppies learn breathing to both sides, extended front and back float, and free style and back stroke for 12 yards. Both groups also learn water safety skills.

Minnow/Fish

Swimmers will be placed in Minnow or Fish groups based on a skills assessment at the first lesson. Minnows learn to tread water for one minute using different kicks, freestyle and back stroke for 25 yards and safety skills. Fish learn survival float for six minutes, three kicks for treading water, dolphin kick, surface dives, underwater swimming and 50 yards elementary backstroke.

Advanced
Stroke Clinic
(5 to 17 yrs)

Must be able to swim one length of the pool using any stroke. Designed for those in need of practice, preparation and endurance before the summer swim team season. Participants will learn swim team based skills such as freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly.  Designed to mimic a swim team experience, class sizes are larger than regular swim lessons.
