"Earlier this summer, I had three wonderful opportunities to experience the McCrorey YMCA Freedom School. Our McCrorey Board meeting was held at the site in June where we experienced our community dollars at work. I was so energized that I wanted more! I had the privilege of returning the following week as a guest reader. I was particularly impressed with the program’s emphasis on creating a passion for reading both during the program and at home. But, I will have to say that I had the most fun going with the group on a field trip to the Riverbanks Zoo. Seeing the animals through the kids’ eyes was such a treat, but even more so was seeing how the structure and parental involvement embedded in the program works in everyday life. Taking 30 kids anywhere is a challenge, but the program leaders and parents used the principles of the Freedom School to reinforce listening, taking turns, looking out for each other, and respecting those around you. At the end of the day, I was the one that felt like I had been given the best summer treat of all!
