YMCA of Greater Charlotte

DREAM CHARLOTTE began as a special video to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the MLK Holiday Prayer Breakfast, an event established by the H.L. McCrorey Family YMCA to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. But DREAM CHARLOTTE became so much more. It became a symbol of Charlotte's commitment to keeping Dr. King's dream alive. A commitment shared by generations of Charlotteans – those who led and participated in civil rights efforts in our city's history, those who continue to shape our community today, and the young people responsible for carrying Dr. King's legacy forward. DREAM CHARLOTTE is their voices reciting a significant section of his famous “I have a dream” speech. Fifty years later, the hope of DREAM CHARLOTTE is to generate new energy for a powerful vision that still rings true.

DREAM CHARLOTTE is a production of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte. Video production was made possible by a grant from the Foundation for the Carolinas. The Knight Foundation also provided a grant for the accompanying booklet.

The 20th Annual MLK Holiday Prayer Breakfast

Benefitting the McCrorey Family YMCA and Y Achievers Program

We commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., social activist and winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, each year at the Annual MLK Holiday Prayer Breakfast established by the H.L. McCrorey Family YMCA.

The 2014 Keynote Speaker is Hill Harper, Acclaimed Actor and Positive Role Model.

Directly following the MLK Holiday Prayer Breakfast is our 2nd Annual MLK Teen Summit at the McCrorey Family YMCA from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM. We hope that Teens from across the Charlotte region will join us for this discussion around social justice, higher education, entrepreneurship and civic engagement. This event is free and open to the community.

The partnership with the City of Charlotte MLK Holiday Planning Committee, which was established in 2012, has made the King holiday a collaborative celebration for the entire community. View a list of the City's complete Martin Luther King Jr. special events.

We are grateful to our 2014 Presenting Sponsor: Food Lion for their continued support of this inspiring event. The generosity of all our 2014 Sponsors has made it possible to increase our efforts in making a difference in our community.

Proceeds from this year's breakfast will provide life-transforming programs for children and teens at the McCrorey Family YMCA and provide teens the opportunity to participate in the Y Achievers program.
