FAQs
Q. What is the YMCA?
A. The Y is a diverse organization of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. The YMCA of Greater Charlotte, a United Way member agency, is comprised of 21 locations, 900 square miles with more program sites in Southern Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, and Union Counties. The YMCA of Greater Charlotte reaches 260,819 people, including 87,445 children and teens, through membership, program participation, volunteerism, and philanthropy.
Q. How is the YMCA different from a gym?
A. The YMCA's pledge is that no one will be denied service based on their ability to pay. The organization has distributed more than $5.4 million in financial assistance, serving 18% of our membership. The 136 - year old non-profit organization serves its community with a continuum of educational, wellness and recreational programs that foster healthy spirit, mind and body.
Q. I already pay membership dues; why should I give money to the YMCA?
A. Your YMCA membership dues cover the cost of operating the YMCA, but do not support the annual campaign.
Q. I gave to the YMCA last year; why are you asking me to contribute again this year?
A. Every year the YMCA of Greater Charlotte solicits funds for the annual campaign. These funds make it possible to keep our promise to make YMCA programs and services available to all, regardless of their ability to pay. All YMCA board members and staff are asked to support the annual campaign.
Q. Is my contribution tax-deductible?
A. Yes, all contributions to the YMCA are deductible. Your contribution needs to be received on or before December 31.
Q. Can gifts be made over the course of the year?
A. Yes. The YMCA is pleased to handle your contribution in any manner you wish. Please indicate on your pledge card the billing and payment arrangements that would be most convenient. You may spread your contribution over several months or you may opt to receive an invoice anytime during the year for the total amount.
Q. Does the YMCA receive funds from the United Way?
A. Some branches of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte receive funding from the United Way. These funds combined with dollars raised through the YMCA's annual campaign provide services and programs critical to the health of our community.
YMCA Mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
