How is the YMCA different from a gym?
The Y is a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. In 2012, the YMCA of Greater Charlotte gave away more than $9.8 million in membership and program assistance to over 81,000 people.
The YMCA of Greater Charlotte, comprised of
19 membership locations
and two resident camps at
Camp Thunderbird
and
Camp Harrison
, engages approximately 292,000 men, women and children. Deeply rooted in the community for 139 years, the YMCA of Greater Charlotte has the long-standing relationships and physical presence not just to promise, but to deliver,
lasting personal and social change
.
I already pay membership dues; why should I give money to the YMCA?
Membership dues cover the cost of maintaining and operating our facilities. At the Y, no child, family or adult is turned away because of inability to pay. Donated dollars are used to provide membership and program assistance for individuals and families who could not afford to participate otherwise. To learn more,
view our 2012 Impact Report
.
Does the YMCA receive funds from the United Way?
Some branches of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte receive funding from the United Way, totaling less than 1% of our operating budget. These funds combined with dollars raised through the YMCA's Annual Community Support Campaign provide programs and services that strengthen the foundation of our community.
Does the money raised through the Community Support Campaign stay local?
Yes. When you give to the Y, your gift has a meaningful,
enduring impact
right in your own neighborhood. All donations made to the YMCA of Greater Charlotte are used to support our local community. In 2012, we raised just over $4 million through our Annual Community Support Campaign.
I gave to the YMCA last year; why are you asking me to contribute again this year?
Every year the YMCA of Greater Charlotte solicits funds for the Annual Community Support Campaign. These funds make it possible to keep our promise of making YMCA programs and services available to all, regardless of ability to pay. All YMCA board members and staff are asked to support the annual campaign each year.
Can gifts be made over the course of the year?
Yes, the YMCA of Greater Charlotte is pleased to handle your contribution in any manner that you wish. Please indicate on your pledge card the billing and payment arrangements that are most convenient for you. You may spread your contribution over several months or you may opt to receive an invoice or
give online
anytime during the year for the total amount.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
Yes, all contributions to the YMCA are tax-deductible. Your contribution must be received on or before December 31.
YMCA Mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
