YMCA of Greater Charlotte

Global Services

At the Y, building a strong global community begins at home. Ys in the U.S. help young people develop cultural competencies, diverse populations connect to the community and individuals around the world gain access to life-changing resources and support.  For example:

  • International events like the University City Block Party, International Day at YMCA Camps and Taste of the World build cultural understanding through festival celebrations.
  • Through cultural exchange, young people from oversees learn new skills and build lasting friendships as counselors at YMCA resident camps.
  • In dance and music, the McCrorey Senior African Drum and Dance Group share African culture at events and for local groups.

As an interconnected global network, the Y has the resources and solutions to build bridges and make our changing communities stronger—both at home and abroad.

International Day
On Friday, July 29, YMCA summer day camps will host International Day. Campers will participate in activities to learn more about the global presence of Ys around the world as well as the YMCA of Greater Charlotte's partnership with Senegal, The Gambia and Jerusalem. Celebrating the diversity and culture that exists locally in Charlotte and extending it to global service is an essential part of developing a broadened worldview. Each camper will also receive a YMCA lanyard as a reminder message to "Think Globally, Act Locally."

Japan YMCA Relief Fund
Since the disaster in Japan, the global YMCA Movement has pledged its solidarity and financial aid. Your YMCA of Greater Charlotte has joined forces with a number of YMCA Associations to raise over $100,000 towards the Japan YMCA efforts. If you have not done so already, please consider making a donation today.
