Parents as Teachers
A Child's Journey Starts at Home
At the Y we believe that a parent is the child's first and most influential teacher. This is the core belief at the center of the Parents As Teachers program's Born to Learn curriculum, which YMCA Parent Educators are providing to 85 under-resourced Latino families in Charlotte.
A goal of YMCA Parents as Teachers is to improve the level of school readiness for children and their families by providing the health and development information, support and encouragement parents need to build a strong foundation for their child's success in school and in life.
YMCA Parent Educators and Community Nurse work hand-in-hand with parents in their own homes and in group workshops. They identify children's health issues and developmental delays, and provide a link to programs and services that can offer needed support.
According to
www.parentsasteachers.org
, at the end of first grade, PAT children scored higher than a comparison group on reading and mathematics achievement tests, and teachers rated them as having fewer behavior problems.
Parents as Teachers is a national organization that equips those who provide early childhood education with tools and curricula that promote kindergarten readiness and healthy development of children.
YMCA Mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
