On April 4, 2004, Sally McKenzie Clark and her cousin Anna Grace Jordan were taken from the world in a tragic car accident. Sally was just 19 at the time of her death – with a lifetime of plans and dreams ahead of her. A freshman at Peace College and a graduate of Charlotte Country Day, Sally touched the lives of everyone that knew her. Her gentle spirit, warm smile and unwavering faith made Sally a truly special young woman.
After Sally’s death, her friends and family decided to create a lasting memorial in her honor. They wanted to not only remember her life, but they also wanted to celebrate what she loved.
One of the things that Sally kept closest to her heart was her faith in God. At Grace Covenant Church, she was known for her strong faith and beautiful singing voice. A close friend recalls the night she became overcome with anxiety over singing in front of the congregation and Sally assured her by repeating these words, "You can do this, I’ll be there to help you."
Sally also loved sports and the outdoors. Her determination and fighting spirit shone through best in that environment. During a mountain bike exercise at a skill-building camp, Sally experienced an asthma attack that nearly sent her home. Sally surprised everyone by not only rallying to the finish, but she mastered even the hardest trails with ease. One leader said she, "Helped bring the team closer by challenging them to think on a deeper level about themselves and religion." Even several knee surgeries did not quell her drive to participate in sports as Sally served as a mentor, assistant trainer and coach when injuries kept her on the sidelines.
It was her love of God and passion for the outdoors that gave David and Jo Clark, Sally’s parents, the idea to build a YMCA in her name. The YMCA’s mission "to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all" is something that Sally fully shared and embraced. Nestled in a pristine 150-acre piece of family farmland within the woods of East Lincoln County, a new YMCA built and named in her honor began to take shape. The ultimate vision of Sally’s Y is to bring people together in God’s name and Sally’s.
