Healthy Families Program
“Many parents ask me if their child is overweight, or at risk of becoming overweight, and they want to know what to do about it. The most important thing I tell them: Obesity is a family event, not an individual event.” Dennis Clements, MD, PhD, MPH
The YMCA Healthy Families Program is designed to initiate lifestyle change for families through education, goal setting and support. The program teaches families to incorporate balanced nutrition, physical activity and social support into their everyday life.
How the Healthy Families Program Works
Families with children ages 7 to 12 can take part in the YMCA Healthy Families Program. Families may be referred into the program by a pediatrician, school nurse, medical professional or YMCA program director. Families will participate in the program together and will meet twice a week for six weeks with the YMCA’s professional staff. Family exercise is part of every class. Families also receive a pass to the YMCA throughout the length of the program.
