In the 13 neighborhoods surrounding the University City YMCA*:

In University City North, the dropout rate is 7.6% while the city average is 5.1%.
In nearby Hidden Valley, it's 13.6%.

In University City South, the juvenile arrest rate is twice the city average.

In 7 of the 13 neighborhoods, less than half of the students are scoring at or above grade level.

By donating to the University City YMCA Annual Campaign, you help fund the following programs:


YMCA Afterschool and Summer Camp  The University City YMCA offers a fun, safe environment for more than 800 children and teens in the summer and another 60 during the hours after school where they engage in enriching, healthy activities with positive role models. Two-thirds of afterschool children receive financial assistance.

$25 provides one day of Afterschool for one child.
$250 provides one child with two weeks of summer camp.

Middle School Matters 

Partnered with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Partners-in-Out-of-School-Time (P.O.S.T), the University City YMCA hosts Middle School Matters at James Martin Middle School. This afterschool program provides 100 6th – 8th graders with a safe place as well as supportive, caring adults to help with homework, model life skills and connect them to a brighter future.

$1,250 provides one child with a school year of Middle School Matters.

YMCA Preschool The YMCA Preschool Curriculum emphasizes socialization, fine and gross motor skills, education and healthy choices in a Christian environment. 40% of participants receive financial assistance.

$50 provides a preschool registration fee for one child.

YMCA Swim Lessons

Each year the University City YMCA provides swim lessons for more than 1,000 children. Their experience builds social, athletic, and leadership skills as well as promoting healthy physical activity. One child in every session of swim lessons receives financial assistance.

$500 provides a full year of swim lessons for one child.

Youth Programs

Each year the University City YMCA provides sports for more than 1,000 children. Youth sports participants will develop their skills while learning sportsmanship, teamwork and the YMCA character values of caring, honesty, responsibility, respect and faith. More than 60% of sports participants receive financial assistance.

$100 provides a sports season for one child.

Charitable gifts made to the YMCA of Greater Charlotte represent a gift to the entire YMCA mission. To help the most number of people in need, the YMCA uses donations where they can do the most good by pooling them together to strengthen the entire community.
