Welcoming WeekSEPTEMBER 14 - 23

Welcoming Week, an initiative of Y-USA's national partner Welcoming America, celebrates the nationwide movement of communities that fully embrace immigrants and their contributions to the social fabric of our country. During Welcoming Week, communities bring together U.S.- and foreign-born neighbors to promote cross-cultural understanding and raise awareness of the benefits of welcoming everyone!

Brace Family YMCA
  • September 17 - 24: Visit the Brace Family YMCA to view multilingual Welcoming Week signage. Leaders Club teens will be passing out Welcoming Week and CommUNITY giveaways along with free Y passes at the branch and at various churches and community centers.
Childress Klein YMCA

Dowd YMCA
  • Visit the Dowd YMCA to participate in our world map activity. Place a sticker over the country where you were born and view other stickers. You’ll be amazed at the diversity of our Y.
Gateway Village YMCA

Harris YMCA
  • ESL Classes: Register September 4 - 6. Classes begin September 11, 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM or 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM at FHC South Blvd.
  • September 17 | 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM or 4: 00 PM – 6: 00 PM: Child Development Sessions (Bilingual) with Parent Educator Ana Butters. Join us to receive support, encouragement and resources from a certified Parent Educator to help your child develop optimally during their early critical years. Our focus is on children prenatal to five years.
  • September 18: Spanish Classes for Adults – Registration is now open. First day of class is September 18. Visit the Harris YMCA Lobby to see a special display of Latin American flags.
  • September 19 | 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM: CD Ambassador Experience – Join us in the large conference room at the Harris YMCA. Our goal is to provide an experience that will allow a glimpse into the reality that our South Blvd community faces and also learn about the efforts the Harris YMCA is making to strengthen this community.
  • September 24: Self Defense Seminar – This event will be translated into Spanish.
  • September 14 – 23: Engage with the Harris YMCA staff as they share Welcoming Week giveaways, such as buttons, stickers and bracelets. Staff and members are also invited to share their heritage and where they are from to be displayed on a world map to highlight the heritage and diversity of the branch and the community.
  • September 14 – 23: Flag display – Beginning September 4, visit our table in the lobby to represent your country of origin. A special display of the countries will be presented throughout Welcoming Week in the main hallway.
Johnston YMCA
  • September 19: Presentation highlighting immigrant staff members during Sunrise Yoga on the lawn. Representation at NoDa Brewery Run Club that evening.
Keith Family YMCA
  • Members are invited to participate in placing a star on a world map banner to represent the country where they were born. This map will travel from the lobby into all programming spaces in an effort to portray the diversity of our Y.
  • There will also be a visual language project that members and visitors can engage in by putting a colored glass bead in a large jar that represents their primary language. By the end of the week the jar will be full and display a variety of colors of beads.
Lake Norman YMCA
  • YMCA staff, members and community members are invited to engage during Welcoming Week with an interactive world map, stickers and activity cards. There will also be a potluck style luncheon that staff, members and community members can bring in different cuisines from their culture for others to sample and enjoy.
Lincoln County YMCA
  • Visit the Lincoln County YMCA during Welcoming Week to redeem a week long experience pass to a great week. Our "around the world" map will hang in the lobby with bios of all our staff that wish to participate in sharing their heritage alongside options for members to place their origin on the map.
  • September 15: Join us at Lincoln County's Apple Festival, where more than 80,0000 people attend, promoting our message with pins, buttons, decals, car magnets and other free give always in the commUNITY spirit. Be sure to stop by our booth!
  • September 17: Grab and go for healthy snacks will be available with a focus on diversity and inclusion.
  • September 18: Our drop in care centers and our preschool will focus activities on openness and inclusivity with fun arts and crafts to invest in the next generation.
  • September 20: All 300 square miles of Lincoln County are invited to our outdoor Pavilion at Lincoln County Y for the Keith Turner Memorial Concert event. We will have fun and games for families, music and a food truck.
  • September 21: The YMCA leadership team will be out in the community delivering our CommUNITY baskets to our Police Departments, Fire Stations and other key partners to promote the unity of all.
Lowe’s YMCA
  • September 17: Lobby Event for Members
  • September 20: Restaurant event promoting CommUNITY with activities for families
McCrorey YMCA
  • September 17 – 21: Welcoming Week will be incorporated into the McCrorey YMCA After School Care Programming. Participants will be educated on each continent, the countries within them and the people who call them home. Each element of the current after school care programming (crafts, snack, homework time, etc.) will incorporate education on diverse cultures.
  • Additionally, the Director of Education for the International House, Dr. Stephanie Galeotti, will be providing information on the International House's services in the lobby.
Morrison Family YMCA
  • Throughout Welcoming Week the Morrison YMCA will engage staff, members and community members with a world map to show the diversity of the branch and the community. There will also be a CommUNITY table with handouts, stickers, activities and more during the entire week.
Sally’s YMCA
  • Visit the Sally's YMCA during Welcoming Week to redeem a week long experience pass to a great week. Our "around the world" map will hang in the lobby with bios of all our staff that wish to participate in sharing their heritage alongside options for members to place their origin on the map.

Steele Creek YMCA
  • September 15: C2 Race at Camp Thunderbird - Branch leaders will display a world map during the C2 Race and encourage participants to pin where they are from.
  • September 17 – 21: After the race, the map will be moved to the Steele Creek YMCA for members to participate.
Stratford Richardson YMCA
  • September 17 – 21 | 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM: YMCA staff and members will share their heritage through presentations and bring in a dish to share. 
  • September 22 | 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM: Culture in the Community - event that will host a number of organizations and vendors showcasing their diversity through food, music, dance and activities.
