This summer, we are set to open our expansion – the Leon Levine Center for Healthy Living. As we open the new spaces, you’ll notice additional changes throughout the existing building. Below you’ll find more details on what’s to come (all dates are tentative & subject to change):

June 11th:

Both the Men’s & Women’s Health Centers will undergo several months of renovations and upgrades, including improvements to life safety equipment & cosmetic upgrades. During this time, only half of each health center will be available for use – see the linked diagrams for specific areas of impact.

Locker rentals and access to fitness equipment will be limited during construction. The good news is that we’ll have brand new lockers and new equipment in the health centers this fall! In the meantime, we have plenty of day use lockers and similar fitness equipment available throughout the facility.

June 25th:

Over the next several months, our cardio equipment will be relocated to Hines Gym. Electrical work will start on June 25th to prep the space for the equipment move on Friday, June 29th. During this time, all pick-up basketball and open gym times will occur in Underwood Gym while group fitness classes will continue to operate on the front court of Hines Gym.

When the work is complete, you can expect to a brand new, expanded cardio floor with updated equipment.

July 2nd:

Our racquetball courts will be closing for a complete re-design, beginning July 2nd. We will be renovating three existing courts and adding a new fourth court. The re-designed courts will continue to honor the Lopez-Ibanez family and once complete, the new Jack Spiers Complex for racquetball/handball will feature:
  • Courts with full glass end walls
  • Larger community space for fellowship and tournaments
  • Equipment storage
We expect the courts to reopen in November. In the meantime, racquetball courts are available for YMCA members at the Lowes YMCA in Mooresville.

In addition, our long-time friend and food service provider Linda Helikson will say goodbye to the Dowd YMCA after 23 years. Don’t worry – she’ll continue to operate the Fitness Bar at the Childress Klein YMCA in Uptown Charlotte.

Over the next several months, we will renovate our kitchen in collaboration with a new food service provider. In the meantime, stay tuned for more details on temporary food options this summer & fall!

July 14th:
Our cycle studio will relocate to the 4th floor.

July 15th:
Our expansion, known as the Leon Levine Center for Healthy Living is now open! This means that all yoga, barre, mat pilates and pilates reformer training will take place in our new studio spaces. Other areas that have opened up? Our Sports Performance Studio featuring Dowd YMCA CrossFit and our activated roof top - perfect for classes and community events! Official grand opening events kick-off on Sunday, July 15th with a community church service hosted by Redemption Church.

July 23rd:
Keith Gym will close as we work to renovate the space from a multi-use space to a dedicated group fitness studio featuring wall-mounted mirrors, ceiling fans, refinished floors and an integrated sound system for the ultimate group fitness experience. During construction, classes will be relocated to our newly designed studios in the Leon Levine Center for Healthy Living and Hines Gym.

Beginning August 4th:
As a part of the renovation, we are expanding our Childwatch and Universal Family Locker Rooms to provide a better experience for our families and swimmers. During this time, Childwatch will relocate to the 4th floor (accessible via stairwell or elevators). The family locker rooms will remain unavailable through October 25th.

In addition, we will be upgrading our life safety equipment and refinishing the floors in Underwood Gym and the pool. During this time, pick-up basketball and open gym will be unavailable. Don’t forget that your YMCA membership provides you access to all 19 YMCA of Greater Charlotte locations. Stratford Richardson, Childress Klein, Harris and McCrorey Family are your closet options with pick-up basketball offerings in August.

Life safety equipment and annual maintenance will also occur in the pool. We will finish up our current swim lesson sessions on Saturday, August 4th and begin the draining process at 1pm. During the month of August, our evening Masters Swim program will move to the Childress Klein YMCA in Uptown Charlotte. Looking for other locations to swim through September 3rd? Your YMCA membership gives you access to all 19 YMCA of Greater Charlotte locations and several are within short walking or driving distance from the Dowd YMCA:

  • Childress Klein YMCA (1 Miles)
  • Stratford Richardson YMCA (4 Miles)
  • Johnston YMCA (5 Miles)
  • Harris YMCA (7 Miles)
Dowd YMCA members will also have access to the Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center, located on S. McDowell Street during our pool closure. To use MCAC, Y members should show their YMCA card and photo ID for access.

We appreciate your membership at the Dowd YMCA and will continue to keep you updated on changes to the facility over the next several months. We’re excited for what’s to come at the Dowd YMCA and hope you are, too.
