As renovation continues at the Dowd YMCA, we will be closing the back entrance of the building and re-routing traffic to a temporary entrance along South Caldwell Street. This work will begin in late January.

During this time, the back entrance will not be accessible, including the parking lot along Lexington Avenue, the pool entrance and the corridor leading from the lobby to the back entrance. Don’t worry, we will have a temporary entrance for easy access into the facility beginning mid-day January 23rd.

The pool can be accessed through our Men’s and Women’s Locker Rooms or our newly open Family Locker Room! The Family Locker Room will be a fully accessible facility with separate changing and shower stalls, perfect for all members regardless of needs or just those who prefer some additional privacy.

There will be a new temporary entrance for those parking in our convenient deck, with a scanner and staff person to assist with any needs. The pathway to enter the facility will be clearly marked for ease. Our East Morehead Street parking lot and entrance will remain open.

The renovation in these areas should be complete in late February.

The former Keith Gym has been through a facelift for the past few months, transitioning from a multi-purpose gym to a dedicated group fitness studio.

Now named Keith Studio, members will enjoy upgraded and brand new amenities as a part of their group fitness workout. Enjoy mirrored walls, ceiling fans, refinished floors and improved sound system and lighting as we reach our fitness goals…together!

Keith Studio will provide our instructors and members a dedicated space to enjoy new and innovative fitness programming. Come see what all of the excitement is about and take one of many classes that will soon call Keith Studio home.

Beginning November 5th, you will notice some changes to our parking lot, including the closure of the South Caldwell Street entrance. This means the only entrance to the Dowd YMCA parking lot will be from East Morehead Street. We will re-open several additional spaces in this area.

We recommend members use our parking deck, which is free for you to enjoy during your workout. This will provide you speedy parking without the stress of being late, especially during peak hours.
Though the remainder of the parking lot will close for construction, the building entrance will remain open and a temporary pedestrian walkway will be created for easy access.

Check out our handy parking map and stay tuned for additional updates.

We have opened our expansion – the Leon Levine Center for Healthy Living. As we open the new spaces, you’ll notice additional changes throughout the existing building. Below you’ll find more details on what’s to come (all dates are tentative & subject to change):

Exciting changes continue to bring new energy to the Dowd Y! As you plan your visits this week, please be aware of new updates you’ll see at the YMCA:
  • Pools are open for water fitness, swim lessons and lap swimming.
  • Basketball fans are excited that Underwood Gym is back open and ready for play.
  • Parking lot resurfacing begins the week of SEPT 17 creating new traffic patterns.
An updated diagram shows the parking lot and sidewalk closures from SEPT 17 through November. Please note the parking options for you during your visit including the free, 383-space Dowd parking deck at the corner of Lexington Avenue and Caldwell Street. There will also be some parking in the remaining surface lot of the Dowd Y including four handicap spaces.

The first phase of our locker room renovations will be complete in mid-August. We will begin occupying the new locker room and will close the existing locker areas for renovation. Further renovation will occur in the wet areas, but all existing areas (steam, sauna and whirlpool) will return when the renovations are complete.

We appreciate your membership at the Dowd YMCA and will continue to keep you updated on changes to the facility over the next several months. We’re excited for what’s to come at the Dowd YMCA and hope you are, too.

As a part of the renovation, we are expanding our Universal Family Locker Rooms to provide a better experience for our families and swimmers. The family locker rooms will remain unavailable through October 25.

Keith Gym will close as we work to renovate the space from a multi-use space to a dedicated group fitness studio featuring wall-mounted mirrors, ceiling fans, refinished floors and an integrated sound system for the ultimate group fitness experience. During construction, classes will be relocated to our newly designed studios in the Leon Levine Center for Healthy Living and Hines Gym. Golf and Volleyball will not be relocated, but classes will all take place in a new location. Be sure to check the Group Ex Class Schedule.

In addition, we will be upgrading our life safety equipment and refinishing the floors in Underwood Gym and the pool. During this time, pick-up basketball and open gym will be unavailable. Don’t forget that your YMCA membership provides you access to all 19 YMCA of Greater Charlotte locations. Stratford Richardson, Childress Klein, Harris and McCrorey Family are your closet options with pick-up basketball offerings in August.

Life safety equipment and annual maintenance will also occur in the pool. We will finish up our current swim lesson sessions on Saturday, August 4th and begin the draining process at 1pm. During the month of August, our evening Masters Swim program will move to the Childress Klein YMCA in Uptown Charlotte. Looking for other locations to swim through September 3rd? Your YMCA membership gives you access to all 19 YMCA of Greater Charlotte locations and several are within short walking or driving distance from the Dowd YMCA:
  • Childress Klein YMCA (1 Miles)
  • Stratford Richardson YMCA (4 Miles)
  • Johnston YMCA (5 Miles)
  • Harris YMCA (7 Miles)
Dowd YMCA members will also have access to the Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center, located on S. McDowell Street during our pool closure. To use MCAC, Y members should show their YMCA card and photo ID for access.

JULY 15
Our expansion, known as the Leon Levine Center for Healthy Living is now open! This means that all yoga, barre, mat pilates and pilates reformer training will take place in our new studio spaces. Other areas that have opened up? Our Sports Performance Studio featuring Dowd YMCA CrossFit and our activated roof top - perfect for classes and community events!

Cycle has begun its major overhaul. Opening late Fall 2018 will be a 2200 square foot state-of-the-art, stadium seating studio with 70 bikes and Leaderboard Technology. Our members will get to enjoy their cycle classes in a more interactive and open setting allowing for an optimized workout.

Members can still enjoy their daily cycle classes by visiting the temporary cycle studio located on the 4th floor.

The Underwood Gym will close on August 14 and will be open for pick-up and open gym until the end of the day on August 13.

Our racquetball courts will be closing for a complete re-design, beginning July 2. We will be renovating three existing courts and adding a new fourth court. The re-designed courts will continue to honor the Lopez-Ibanez family and once complete, the new Jack Spiers Complex for racquetball/handball will feature:
  • Courts with full glass end walls
  • Larger community space for fellowship and tournaments
  • Equipment storage
Additionally, some of the previous racquetball court space will become fitness space! Our members will be able to enjoy 5000 square feet of fitness space between the 1st and 3rd floors.

We expect the courts and fitness space to reopen in November. In the meantime, racquetball courts are available for YMCA members at the Lowes YMCA in Mooresville.
