When you give to the Lake Norman YMCA, you make our community better through life-changing programs and services focused on:

Summer Camp
Each year, the Lake Norman YMCA engages more than 1,300 kids in summer camp, creating a safe place where kids can be themselves, cultivate friendships and learn from positive role models. One in three campers receives financial assistance.
A gift of $1,000 sends a child to four weeks of summer day camp filled with enriching, healthy activities and positive role models.

Y ReadersY Readers
Y Readers: A nationally-recognized literacy program of YMCA of Greater Charlotte, Y Readers is designed for first through third grade students who are reading below grade level. The program, offered to families at no cost, utilizes certified teachers to provide the additional support students need to be proficient in reading by the end of third grade. Y Readers serves over 700 students annually, across three school districts, through a six-week summer camp and afterschool program. With the generous support of our donors, the Lake Norman YMCA funds 48 students from Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville Elementary Schools during the summer.
Participants also receive free swim lessons and water safety instruction at the Y.

A gift of $1,450 offers a child struggling to read the opportunity to improve his literacy skills and build confidence in the classroom through Y Readers.

Safety Around WaterSafety Around Water
Safety Around Water is the Y’s on-site water safety program that engages low-income youth living in local apartment communities where pools are often without lifeguards. The 8-session course, taught by certified YMCA swim instructors and lifeguards, teaches children basic water safety and swimming skills that reduce their risk of drowning and give them confidence in and around water. Safety Around Water served 1,400 children at 28 local apartment communities last summer.

A gift of $70 gives a child at risk of drowning the chance to learn the life-saving skill of swimming through water safety instruction at his apartment community pool.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a small-group program developed and established in partnership with the LIVESTRONG Foundation, assists those who are living with, through, or beyond cancer to strengthen their spirit, mind and body.

Throughout this 12-week program, participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA has served more than 30,000 cancer survivors in more than 400 communities across the nation.

O.W.L.S. (Older Wiser Living Stronger)
The Y helps the senior members of our community avoid isolation by bringing them together to share in common interests like water fitness, walking, wellness workshops, creative arts, travel excursions and Christian fellowship. Offered to participants at no cost, the Lake Norman YMCA OWLS program engages 175 seniors twice a week at four off-site locations throughout the community.
A gift of $450 provides a senior with six months of off-site activities where she can connect with new friends and find a network of support.

Adaptive Water SkiingAdaptive Water Skiing
The Lake Norman YMCA and Carolinas Rehabilitation have partnered since 2000 to provide a special water skiing program for adults and children with disabilities. Since it began, the program has grown significantly and now serves 90 skiers each week throughout the summer.
“My son Cody loves adventure, challenges and the water; but because of spina bifida, water sports once seemed impossible. Yet, at the age of 10, Cody recently completed his fifth year in the Y’s Adaptive Water Skiing program. He takes great pride in being able to compete in an athletic event, and it gives him confidence to embrace more obstacles. Without this program and the support of the Lake Norman YMCA, Cody would not get to experience competitive fun in the water.”
-Casey Sherrill
A gift of $200 offers four disabled athletes the unique opportunity to participate in the adaptive water skiing program for one week during the summer.

English As A Second Language
Each year, more than 50 adults and children participate in English as a Second Language at the Lake Norman YMCA, giving them a better opportunity to sustain employment and connect with the community. Fully funded by donated dollars, the program is offered twice a week at nearly no cost to participants.
Financial Assistance
Our Y is committed to serving those in greatest need. Through the generosity of our donors, we’re able to provide financial assistance for membership access and program participation, making life-changing Y programs and services available to those who need us most in the Lake Norman community.
