Give to the Y Give to the Y

When you give to the Lowe’s YMCA, you make our community better through life-changing programs and services focused on:

Give to the YY Readers
Y Readers is the YMCA of Greater Charlotte’s nationally-recognized literacy program designed for rising first through third grade students who are reading below grade level. The program, offered to families at no cost, utilizes certified teachers to provide the additional support students need to be proficient in reading by the end of third grade. Y Readers serves over more than 800 students annually, across three school districts, through a six-week summer camp and an afterschool program. With the generous support of our donors, the Lowe’s YMCA was able to fund 64 Y Readers students last summer at Park View Elementary. Participants also receive free swim lessons and water safety instruction at the Y.

“Eduardo was having trouble adjusting to life in a new country and a new school. His teacher suggested Y Readers, and Eduardo jumped right in. He was excited to spell out sight words and talk about the books he was reading. Throughout the program, his teachers could see that he was progressing in his reading and comprehension skills, and his confidence was rising each day. Y Readers helped Eduardo reach his goals of becoming a better reader, but most importantly, built his confidence as a scholar.”

A donation of $1,450 offers a child struggling to read the opportunity to improve his literacy skills and build confidence in the classroom through Y Readers.

Summer Camp, Afterschool & Preschool
Each week during the summer, more than 150 kids attend camp at the Lowe’s YMCA where they can be themselves, cultivate friendships and learn from positive role models. Another 160 engage in afterschool and preschool during the school year. One in four receives financial assistance.
The staff at the YMCA is diverse and respectful to the individual needs of each of its members and non-members. Their caring and love for each child is evident every day. The afterschool staff is top notch from the management to each individual counselor and we are always greeted with a smile. For anyone looking for a safe, fun, and loving environment for their children they need to look no further than the Lowe’s YMCA.
-Afterschool Parent
A gift of $200 sends a child to one week of summer day camp filled with enriching, healthy activities and positive role models.
A gift of $750 provides one semester of afterschool care for a child in need of a safe place to go after the bell rings.

Give to the YSafety Around Water
Safety Around Water is the Y’s on-site water safety program that engages low-income youth living in local apartment communities where pools are often without lifeguards. The 8-session course, taught by certified YMCA swim instructors and lifeguards, teaches children basic water safety and swimming skills that reduce their risk of drowning and give them confidence in and around water. Safety Around Water served 1,400 children at 28 local apartment communities last summer.
A gift of $70 gives a child at risk of drowning the chance to learn the life-saving skill of swimming through water safety instruction at her apartment community pool.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a small-group program developed and established in partnership with the LIVESTRONG Foundation, assists those who are living with, through, or beyond cancer to strengthen their spirit, mind and body.
Throughout this 12-week program, participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA has served more than 30,000 cancer survivors in more than 400 communities across the nation.
The Lowe’s YMCA engages 40 cancer patients and survivors in the program each year.
“Last summer after being diagnosed with breast and uterine cancer and undergoing several surgeries and
radiation treatments, my doctors suggested I join the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program. They were right! Participating in the program helped me regain strength as well as my positive outlook on life. The compassion and knowledge of the Lowe’s YMCA staff, along with the support of fellow participants, helped me improve my quality of life – physically, mentally and spiritually. I am very thankful for the program and the remarkable role it has played in my healing process. I would recommend it to anyone currently battling or recovering from cancer.”
– Tanya Marsh
A gift of $500 gives a cancer survivor 12 weeks of individualized programming to help regain strength, stamina and quality of life.
