Give to the Y Give to the Y

When you give to the Harris & Harris Express YMCAs, you make our community better through life-changing programs and services focused on:

Give to the YY Readers
Y Readers is the YMCA of Greater Charlotte’s nationally-recognized literacy program designed for students in grades K-3 who are reading below grade level. The program, offered to families at no cost, utilizes certified teachers to provide the additional support students need to boost literacy skills, with enrichment activities to support physical and social emotional growth. Y Readers serves more than 900 students annually, across three school districts, through a six-week summer camp and a before/afterschool program. The Harris YMCA serves 96 students at Huntingtowne Farms Elementary each summer. During summer, 2017, 76% of Y Readers improved or maintained their reading level.
“At the end of first grade Elie was reading below grade level and we were worried he would fall behind over the summer. Since joining Y Readers, he has gained confidence with his reading and his comprehension grew substantially. He is now challenging himself with his reading and loves to practice. In fact, Elie is now reading above grade level and has improved so much that the school recently tested him for the talented and gifted class.”
-Gisela Habbouche and Brandon Giles

A gift of $1,450 offers a child struggling to read the opportunity to improve his literacy skills and build confidence in the classroom through Y Readers.

Give to the YTeen Leadership Development
Through the Harris YMCA’s Youth & Government Leader’s Club programs, teens get the chance to learn the value of civic service and enhance their public speaking and relationship-building skills. These programs engage 80 teens annually.
A gift of $300 helps a teen build a strong foundation for the future with one year of leadership development programming.

Safety Around Water
Safety Around Water is the Y’s on-site water safety program that engages low-income youth living in local apartment communities where pools are often without lifeguards. The 8-session course, taught by certified YMCA swim instructors and lifeguards, teaches children basic water safety and swimming skills that reduce their risk of drowning and give them confidence in and around water. Safety Around Water served 1,400 children at 28 local apartment communities last summer.

A gift of $70 gives a child at risk of drowning the chance to learn the life-saving skill of swimming through water safety instruction at her apartment community pool.

Give to the YLIVESTRONG at the YMCA
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a small-group program developed and established in partnership with the LIVESTRONG Foundation, assists those who are living with, through, or beyond cancer to strengthen their spirit, mind and body.
Throughout this 12-week program, participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA has served more than 30,000 cancer survivors in more than 400 communities across the nation. The Harris YMCA serves 36 participants annually.
“I will never be able to articulate how much it has meant to me being a part of the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program. I feel stronger and more motivated than ever to make the most of each day and become physically, emotionally and spiritually healthier.”
– Program Participant
A gift of $500 gives a cancer survivor 12 weeks of individualized programming to help regain strength, stamina and quality of life.
Give to the YBeyond Limits
Through a unique collaboration with Carolinas HealthCare System, the Russ Guerin Beyond Limits program provides specialized post-rehabilitative training to help traumatic injury patients, as well as individuals living with a chronic disease, regain physical abilities. This program serves 50 participants annually.
“After suffering two strokes in six months that left my entire left side paralyzed, my physical therapist referred me to the Y. From the moment I walked through the doors at the Harris YMCA, I immediately felt welcome.
The front desk staff suggested I join the Beyond Limits Program, and it has been the best thing I’ve done since my strokes and is absolutely the highlight of my day. I’m able to work on my coordination and balance in the pool. At each doctor’s appointment I continue to improve, and I feel like I’ve regained my independence. The Harris YMCA is my house of hope.”
-Rich Schneider
A gift of $3,000 provides eight weeks of specialized post-rehabilitation training for two participants in the Beyond Limits program.

Give to the YStrengthening the South Boulevard Community
Committed to serving the growing Hispanic population in our local community, the Harris YMCA works in partnership with neighboring schools, community initiatives and like-minded nonprofits to extend our reach and impact across Charlotte’s fragile South Boulevard corridor.

Our outreach efforts include:
  • English as a Second Language – serves 200 participants annually through a collaboration with Forest Hill Church and Central Piedmont Community College
  • Parents as Teachers – provides 25 under-resourced families each year with access to the education and support they need to help their children develop optimally and prepare for kindergarten
  • Community Workshops – hosts seven sessions each year for local families, with topics focused on healthy living, mental health support, and accessing community and school resources
“My first experience with the Y came through English as a Second Language. The classes taught me to be more confident with my English and prepared me to go into the community and be more comfortable interacting with people and my surroundings. My second experience with the Y came when I joined the Parents as Teachers program. I’ve gained knowledge about where both my kids should be developmentally, and I’ve been able to get connected with resources and other families.
Give to the YPAT and ESL have taught me new things that have made an impact on the way I interact with my children. My second grader is doing better in school because I am able to communicate with his teachers and am able to communicate better with him. I am thankful for the opportunities the Y has provided for my family.”
-Geydi Paz
Harris YMCA Equity Fund
The Harris YMCA Equity Fund exists because we believe every child deserves the opportunity to reach his or her greatest potential regardless of family income. The fund supports kids and families who need additional resources in order to participate in Harris YMCA youth programming, including summer camp, afterschool, preschool, gymnastics, dance, youth sports and adaptive swim lessons. Families are awarded Equity Fund assistance after completing a personal and confidential review of their financial situation, and after My Y Pricing rate adjustments have been applied. The Harris YMCA Equity Fund provides assistance above and beyond the standard rate adjustments.
