How is the YMCA different from a gym?
The Y is one of the nation’s leading nonprofits strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The YMCA of Greater Charlotte, comprised of 19 membership locations and two resident camps, engages nearly 300,000 men, women and children – regardless of age, income or background – to nurture the potential of children and teens, improve the nation’s health and well-being, and provide opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Deeply rooted in the community for 145 years, the YMCA of Greater Charlotte has the long-standing relationships and physical presence not just to promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change.
I already pay membership dues; why should I give money to the YMCA?
Membership fees keep the lights on and the doors open. Donations invite everyone inside. At the Y, no family, adult or child is turned away because of inability to pay. Donated dollars provide membership and program assistance for individuals and families who could not afford to participate otherwise.
Does the YMCA receive funds from the United Way?
Some branches of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte receive funding from the United Way. This totals less than 1% of our operating budget. These funds, combined with dollars raised through the YMCA Annual Campaign, provide those in need with access to the Y’s life-changing programs and services.
Does the money raised through the Annual Campaign stay local?
Yes. When you give to the Y, your gift has a meaningful, enduring impact right in your own neighborhood. All donations made to the YMCA of Greater Charlotte support our local community. Through the generous support of our 2018 Annual Campaign donors, the YMCA of Greater Charlotte raised more than $6.7 million to ensure that everyone in our community has access to the Y’s life-changing programs and services.
I gave to the YMCA last year; why are you asking me to contribute again this year?
Every year the YMCA of Greater Charlotte solicits funds for the Annual Campaign. These funds make it possible to keep our promise of making YMCA programs and services available to all, regardless of ability to pay. All YMCA board members and staff are asked to support the Annual Campaign each year.
Can gifts be made over the course of the year?
Yes. Please indicate on your pledge card the billing and payment arrangements that are most convenient for you. You may spread your donation over several months or you may opt to receive an invoice or give online anytime during the year for the total amount.
Is my gift tax-deductible?
Yes. All gifts to the YMCA are tax-deductible. Your donation must be received on or before December 31.
Does the YMCA offer sponsorship opportunities? Do certain level sponsors receive exclusivity?
Yes, the YMCA offers several sponsorship opportunities including special events and youth sports. However, as an inclusive organization that welcomes sponsorship support and partnership opportunities from a wide variety of organizations, the YMCA of Greater Charlotte does not offer sponsor exclusivity based on industry or service/product offerings, except in rare circumstances deemed appropriate by the YMCA.
