In September 2016, protests and anger erupted in our streets, putting a spotlight on racial tension and distrust among neighbors. Leaders of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) and the YMCA of Greater Charlotte recognize the responsibility of community organizations like ours to help foster relationships, establish connections and eliminate barriers to a better life.

Last summer that effort began with ensuring youth ages 13 – 18 had access to a Summer of Opportunity at the Y. In 2018, that pilot program is expanding and giving access to teens all year long through LEVEL UP.

These goals also align with recommendations of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Opportunity Task Force and address the need for early interventions in life to create access and opportunities and increase economic mobility.

Program partners include the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and City of Charlotte, along with:
  • B Music Youth
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas
  • Boys to Men Foundation
  • Champions for Peace and Charlotte Tornadoes
  • Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
  • Communities In Schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg
  • Do It 4 The Hood
  • Heal Charlotte
  • Project 658
  • Promise Youth Development
  • Renaissance West Community Initiative
