The YMCA of Greater Charlotte works with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Lincoln County Schools and Mooresville Graded School District to identify schools and students with the highest need for Y Readers. School leaders assist in selecting certified teachers and teacher assistants from their own faculty to lead the program, identify students to participate in Y Readers, and provide facilities for the program. Together, the Y and partnering schools track student progress and measure the program’s impact.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Opportunity Task Force
The Y works in alignment with the recommendations of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Opportunity Task Force, which identified in April 2017 several factors and determinants that need to be addressed in order to increase upward mobility for children born into poverty: early care and education, college and career readiness, child and family stability, impact of segregation, and social capital.

Read Charlotte
Read Charlotte is a community initiative that unites families, educators and community partners to improve children’s literacy from birth to third grade. The community is working to increase the number of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' third graders who read on grade level from 39% (2015) to 80% by 2025. The Y is one of many community partners working alongside Read Charlotte to provide the services and resources that students need in order to reach reading proficiency by third grade.
