Sloane Mayberry, Owner of New Castle Properties, serves on the YMCA Camp Thunderbird Board of Managers. Sloane says “Camp Thunderbird has been changing the lives of campers and staff for 85 years. I am passionate about our board work because Camp Thunderbird makes a real difference in the lives of all the people it touches. It’s a tradition that continues, generation after generation. After being on staff at Thunderbird in the 1990’s it is so exciting to still be meaningfully connected to such a special place.”

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, is the oldest nationally-celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the U.S. June 19 marks the date that more than 250,000 enslaved Africans in the state of Texas became aware of their freedom, two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed on January 1, 1863.
#Juneteenth is an opportunity to celebrate, lament and educate: celebrating emancipation, liberation, and progress; lamenting that there is still much work to be done; and educating for racial equity and inclusion of all people.

In honor of the upcoming Juneteenth holiday, we asked members of our Y team to share what Juneteenth means to them.
Carnel Hoover began her career with the YMCA in 2017 as a member of the business office support team after retiring as a human resources director. She holds a bachelor’s in psychology, master’s in early childhood Education, MBA and a Ph.D. in business administration and PHR. When asked what Juneteenth means to her, she shared “I commemorate the holiday with a cookout with friends. We intentionally discuss the history of Juneteenth, what we’ve faced in our personal lives and where we are in America today.”

In honor of the upcoming Juneteenth holiday, we asked members of our Y team to share what Juneteenth means to them.
Darcelle McDougald, association human resources coordinator, first learned the importance of Juneteenth when she and her husband moved to San Antonio, Texas in 2006. Her church family and community celebrated with music, poetry, dance and food. She appreciates that the holiday isn’t centered on what Black people have endured, but rather on their capacity to love themselves and each other through it all.
Darcelle plans to celebrate Juneteenth with her family this year and says, “I know we are a constant reminder for our three sons that Black love, Black freedom and Black happiness is still alive and strong. That our struggle to raise them in this crazy world is one we do because we love and respect what our ancestors fought so hard to give us.”
