🇪🇨 Originally from Cuenca, Ecuador, Nori takes great pride in her heritage, which she describes as a badge of honor. Hispanic Heritage Month is a meaningful opportunity for her to share the richness of Ecuadorian culture and values with others. Ecuador will always be her home, and she carries its warmth and spirit with her wherever she goes.
Nori celebrates her heritage by passing down traditions and values and sharing her experiences to help others navigate life in a new place. She also loves sharing food and customs with her husband's family, creating a beautiful blend of cultures.
At the Y, Nori’s role as a Spanish Teacher allows her to directly influence her students, teaching them about Ecuador’s vibrant culture, food, and architecture. She’s proud to share the beauty of Cuenca, often called the "Athens of Ecuador," and its rich history with her students.
Thank you, Nori, for sharing your culture and making a lasting impact at the Y!

🇲🇽 Originally from Mexico City, Claudia proudly shares her Mexican culture and traditions with her students through games and songs.
Claudia celebrates her heritage by celebrating traditions like Día de Muertos, Independence Day, and Christmas with her family and friends. She enjoys preparing traditional Mexican food, dressing in regional attire, and creating altars for Día de Muertos to honor her loved ones.
Moving to Charlotte 12 years ago without knowing anyone was challenging, but the YMCA became a family for Claudia and her children. She’s proud to help other Hispanic staff and members through translation and to be a part of such a welcoming community.
Thank you, Claudia, for sharing your culture and passion with the Y family!

As we celebrate our YMCA’s 150th anniversary this year, we also take time to honor the rich history of the land we call home.
Long before Charlotte’s skyline took shape, the Catawba Nation, known as the "people of the river" or yeh is-WAH h'reh, settled along the Catawba River Valley. Their villages, council houses, and sweat lodges were at the heart of regional trade routes, making them an essential part of the area’s early history.
As we reflect on 150 years of serving the Charlotte community, we acknowledge the deep Native American roots in this region and honor the Catawba Nation’s contributions to the culture and history of our home.
This Indigenous Peoples Day, we celebrate both the legacy of the Catawba, the other 8 recognized Native American Tribes in North Carolina and the diverse stories of our Indigenous members today.
