Nestled along nearly two miles of Lake Wylie’s scenic shoreline, YMCA Camp Thunderbird is where adventure, personal growth, and lifelong friendships come to life. Just 30 minutes from Charlotte, our unique waterfront setting provides the perfect environment for campers to build confidence, embrace challenges, and create unforgettable summer memories. OVERNIGHT CAMP (Ages 7-16)
Traditional camp is packed with exciting land and water activities designed to challenge and inspire. Campers can wakeboard, kayak, paddleboard, tackle high ropes courses, learn outdoor survival skills, and even go horseback riding. Whether trying something new or improving a skill, campers gain confidence, resilience, and friendships that last long after summer ends.
COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING PROGRAM (Rising High School Juniors)
This four-week leadership program helps teens develop mentoring, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while gaining hands-on experience. CITs live in cabins with younger campers, meet daily with the program director, and take on responsibilities like leading activities and organizing talent shows. It’s the perfect opportunity to build leadership skills that extend far beyond camp.
DAY CAMP (Ages 6-12)
For younger campers looking for adventure without overnight stays, Camp Thunderbird’s Day Camp offers an exciting, structured outdoor experience. With thrilling water sports, outdoor survival skills, and team-building activities, each day fosters confidence, independence, and new friendships. It’s the perfect way to explore, play, and grow in a supportive and fun environment.
No matter the program, YMCA Camp Thunderbird is where kids discover new passions, develop lifelong skills, and create memories they’ll cherish forever.

Cancellations/Refunds
Please fill out this form on our Cases Portal to request a program change or cancellation.
You will need to log in to your YMCA online account to complete the form.
Cancellations for Overnight Camp will not be accepted via telephone and must be submitted through the cases portal as instructed above. All balances for Overnight Camp sessions must be paid in full by May 15. Cancellations requested before or on September 1st, will receive a full refund, including deposit. Cancellations on or after September 2nd will forfeit the deposit fee paid for each session. Cancellations after May 15th will forfeit all fees.
