During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’d like to lift up Sarah Jeffs, one of our incredible staff members who has inspired us this year during her battle with breast cancer! 👏
On April 19th, Sarah received the diagnosis no one wants. She had her annual mammogram a few weeks earlier, which promptly required further screening with a biopsy. Following the biopsy, her worst fears came true when her doctor informed her it was breast cancer. Given her family history of cancer, the best way to manage her diagnosis was a bilateral mastectomy and lymph node removal in May.
By August, she was back to work at Sara's YMCA as both a Personal Trainer and the Lead Instructor for LiveSTRONG, our cancer wellness program. Having now gone through her own journey with cancer, she has a new appreciation for all of our LiveSTRONG participants! Sarah says battling breast cancer is one of the toughest challenges she has ever had. She is forever grateful to her family and friends who kept her going when she didn't think she could any longer, as well as her phenomenal colleagues at Sara's who sent cards, texts, and gift cards during her treatment and recovery.
Sarah is advocating more than ever for regular breast cancer screening, as her cancer would have spread rapidly if it had not been detected in the early stages. Early detection methods include monthly breast self-exams, as well as regular clinical breast exams and mammograms. In the United States, a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer sometime in her life is 1 in 8. The 5-year relative survival rate when diagnosed at the localized stage, before cancer spreads outside of the breast, is 99%. Knowledge and early detection can save lives!

As Down Syndrome Awareness Month continues, we’re honored to highlight our member Ethan Beard! 🤗
Ethan is creative, artistic, imaginative, sporty, happy, and loving! He loves listening to and playing music including drums, guitar, harmonica, and piano. He produces masterful works on Minecraft, as well as with Legos and Lincoln Logs. He also loves to draw! He graduated from Philips Academy last May and continues in their Bridges program to further his education.
Ethan’s outgoing personality is engaging. He has no concept of being mean, and it has been delightful to see his vocabulary and sense of humor evolve over the years. Morrison Family YMCA served as a second home for him during his elementary, middle, and high school years. He enjoyed interacting with peers, older students, and the caring and nurturing counselors and adult staff. The Y community supported his creativity, imagination, and independence while providing a place for him to belong. Now that he is older, he has recently started volunteering at Morrison to develop his job skills and increase his independence!
His parents say that Down syndrome has affected them in positive ways, making them more patient, tolerant, and inclusive than they may have been otherwise. All parents face challenges while raising children; the specific challenges vary. The whole family shares the goal of Ethan being a reliable worker and confident resident outside the family home. Living with Ethan and walking with him through his journey has been rewarding for them.
As we recognize Down Syndrome Awareness Month, let us honor Ethan’s story and the countless others who enrich our lives. Together, we can celebrate diversity and build a future full of love and inclusivity!
