Adventure Recreation

Want to add adventure to your event?

Our YMCA Camp Thunderbird staff facilitates adventure activities for an additional fee. Advance scheduling required.

Zip Line

Our 300' dual zip line departs from 40' high and uses a simple gravity brake to bring riders to a gradual stop at the low point of the cable.

Climbing Wall

Our climbing wall allows 1 or 2 climbers to ascend vertically up to 50' while on belay.

Alpine Tower

This vertical playpen allows 1 or 2 climbers to navigate a network of poles, ropes and nets as they ascend up to 50' while on belay.

Giant Swing

Connected to the Alpine Tower, this giant swing suspends a participant from a 50' high vertical cable. The participant is hauled up backwards with a rope and pulley system plus group teamwork. At their discretion, the participant uses a quick-release rope to detach from the haul system and swing freely from the cable to which they are attached, much like a pendulum.

Power Pole/Trapeze Jump

The most complete combination of both physical and mental challenges. While connected to a belay rope, a participant climbs a 25' utility pole and maneuvers themselves onto its top. Then, the next step challenges participants to jump from the top of the pole and grab a suspended trapeze bar.

Paddlesports

Choose from three different activities:

  • Canoes, available anytime.
  • Kayaks, available during the warmest weeks.
  • Stand-Up Paddleboards, available during the warmest weeks.

All participants must wear provided U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Devices (PFD's).

Wet Wylie

During the months of May, August, and September, groups may choose to enjoy our Wet Wylie Water Slide. Starting from a 30' tower, the slide consists of flexible vinyl suspended from steel cables and empties riders straight into Lake Wylie. All participants must wear provided U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Devices (PFD's).

Archery

A perennial favorite of children and youth groups, our Archery range boasts eight shooting stables and multiple targets. Designed to serve as an introduction to the sport, we use small/medium recurved bows and target arrows.

Riflery

Adjacent to the Archery range is our riflery range. Using BB and/or Pellet guns, this activity serves as a great introduction to children and youth about the importance of gun safety and benefits of responsible use.

Team Building

Whether at YMCA Camp Thunderbird or your locale, our customized team building programs engage groups in size from 5 to 125.

With varying options of depth and intensity, our expert facilitators align your experience with your specific objectives and goals. Choose from a day or overnight experience, on or off site.

Team building benefits all types of groups – large, small, youth, adult, church, school, civic, business. Through group and individual initiatives, participants work together in an environment of respect, honesty, caring, responsibility and fun to achieve team success. The team concept relies on individuals choosing group success over individual recognition. By learning fundamental team concepts in our program, participants begin to practice and develop skills that transfer into their group or work environment.

We design Organizational Team Building specifically to help corporate groups experience the key elements of success. During the team building process, employee groups discuss and understand how they apply the learned concepts to their job. We also focus on how to transfer the unity, cooperation and teamwork back to the organization.

What are the benefits?
