Our Facilities

YMCA Camp Thunderbird sits on 106 acres along the banks of Lake Wylie, South Carolina, easily accessible from Interstates 77 & 85 and only 17 miles from uptown Charlotte.

The Lake

Our greatest classroom is the 12,455 acres of Lake Wylie. Students may determine the pH of the lake, dig in the lake bottom for aquatic insects or sharpen their canoe skills in one of our protected coves. Lake Wylie also offers a great backdrop to your evening campfire, dining experience and walks around the site.

The Land

Our forest trails provide a path for discovery around each bend with many living and non-living components of the forest. Recreation fields provide ample space for group activities as well as a place to recreate with your students.

Indoor Program Areas

Although most of our programming occurs outdoors, our site includes heated indoor classrooms, cabins, recreational halls, and a dining facility. Our center showcases an outdoor amphitheater, two outdoor pavilions, a challenge course, a wildlife room, a pioneer cabin and a "Star Lab" planetarium.

Cabins

Overnight groups enjoy our heated cabins equipped with bunk beds, restrooms and showers.

Dining Hall

Overnight groups enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner in our spacious dining hall overlooking Lake Wylie.
