Swim Assessments

The YMCA of Greater Charlotte is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable pool experience for all. All children 12 and under must participate in a swimming skills assessment and will be assigned a green, yellow or no swim band. These bands assist our certified lifeguards in keeping our inexperienced swimmers safe. Thank you for your cooperation. 

No Band

Children who cannot demonstrate the required skills or do not wish to participate in the assessment will be classified as a non-swimmer and will not be given a swim band.

NON-SWIMMERS AGES 5 AND YOUNGER:

  • Must remain within an arm's length of an adult at all times. 

NON-SWIMMERS AGES 6-12:

  • Must remain within an arm's length of an adult. 

OR

  • Must wear Coast Guard approved life jacket with active adult supervision. 

WHAT IS CONSIDERED SAFE ADULT SUPERVISION

  • Age 16 or older
  • Actively watching swimmers in and out of the water.
  • Supervise no more than 2 non-swimmers who are not wearing approved life jackets.
Yellow Band

A yellow band allows swimmers to use swim safe areas and small slides designated for swimmers who are not yet ready for deeper water and more challenging slides.

TO RECEIVE A YELLOW BAND, SWIMMERS MUST DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Float on back for 3-5 seconds and regain vertical position on their own. 
  • Float on stomach for 3-5 seconds and regain vertical position on their own. 
  • Swim 15 feet on stomach unassisted. 
Green Band

A green band gives proficient swimmers full access to the pools and slides.

TO RECEIVE A GREEN BAND, SWIMMERS MUST DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Float on back for 3-5 seconds and regain vertical position on their own. 
  • Float on stomach for 3-5 seconds and regain vertical position on their own. 
  • Swim the entire length of the pool  (25 yards) on stomach, unassisted and without resting while maintaining a horizontal body position
  • Jump in deep water and return to the surface. 
  • Tread water for one minute with ears and face above water at all times.
