[Charlotte, NC – February 1, 2017] – The YMCA of Greater Charlotte’s board of directors and staff are pleased to announce that the Y surpassed its 2016 annual campaign fundraising goal of $5.1 million, raising $5.4 million in funds that will make a direct and lasting impact in the community.

Todd Tibbits, YMCA of Greater Charlotte CEO, stated, “We’re thrilled about surpassing our goal during the 2016 annual campaign. What’s even more exciting is that our Y received gifts from over 10,000 donors in the Charlotte community who believe in our cause.” In addition to individual donors, the campaign received significant support from local, regional and national businesses and foundations.

The philanthropic investments made in 2016 will allow the Y to reach even more kids and families who need us now more than ever. About the campaign, YMCA of Greater Charlotte association board chair, Pete Lash said, “Our ability to raise these critical dollars is a direct result of the hard work of many YMCA staff and countless volunteers, including the 2016 annual campaign chair, Nancy McNelis. Their passion and commitment, paired with the generosity of our donors, will allow the Y to continue serving those who need us most in our community.”

The Y is more than a gym or place to take swim lessons. The Y provides a sense of belonging, fosters community and helps individuals and families reach their full potential. Funds raised through the 2016 annual campaign help us operate at our best and deliver on our four key areas of impact: youth potential and academic success, drowning prevention, community health challenges, and access and belonging for all. When we’re at our best, hundreds of rising K-3rd grade students combat summer learning loss by spending the summer months engaged in literacy instruction and enrichment activities.

At our best, our Y sends certified swim instructors to low-income apartment communities throughout the city to teach water safety lessons to youth who are most at risk of drowning. When we’re at our best, we’re helping a cancer survivor get her life back, and we’re open and welcoming to all in the community, regardless of ability, background or income. With the success of our annual campaign, we can continue to help our community thrive and deliver on our promise to create lasting personal and social change.

Nancy McNelis, 2016 annual campaign chair, was elated at the outcome of the campaign. “We thank those who have invested in the Y, and not just financially – so many also gave generously of their time, including program volunteers, board members and event participants. We look forward to continued impact as we multiply the mission of the YMCA in service to all children and families in the Charlotte community.”
